Broadband speed - can it go any faster?

Is there anything that can be done to improve my speed?
When I joined Plusnet I was getting speeds that averaged out at 5.08 Mb
I appreciate that this was in the Broadband "Training Period" But I had no issues with quality.
I am now lucky if I get 3.3 Mb the same I was getting before ADSL2+
I have a new Thompson router with new filters (about 6 weeks old - I’m a new customer)
The router is plugged directly in to the master BT socket.
Is there anything that can be done?
Or is this the best I can hope for.
We are so far behind in this country with respect to some of the far eastern countries.
I'm sure that one day we will drag ourselves into the 20th century and even have
eyes on the 21st century - one day but I’m not holding my breath!
Regards
H.

I assume that you are connected to the master socket not the test socket.
If this is correct can you connect to the test socket with nothing else connected and report the stats from the router then plug in your phone to the test socket filter and see if they change.
Note when connected to the test socket all the other telephone point should be dead

Your internal wiring is really mucking things up
How many wires are connected to the removable faceplate - there should only be two http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm
Just to add that speed tests and current line speed are irrelevant at the moment

I will remove it again and take a photo and note the numbers all the wires go to.
Just out of curiosity.
Why do the speed tests not matter at the moment?
As I have removed the internal wiring why did I not see an immediate jump is broadband speed?

The IP profile is set according to the sync speed (doesn't sound unreasonable does it) BUT it drops almost instantly on a low sync even and then takes about 3 days to go back up again if the sync speed increases and remains at a higher level

I remove the 4 wires from cons 1, 3, 4, 6
Leaving wires to conn 2 & 5
And I wont bugger it all up?
Why are there 6 wires connected in the first place?
If I understand it correctly the wires coming out of the back of the face plate disappear of into the wall, take some mysterious path around the walls of my house up to the socket in the master bedroom picking up all sorts of interference on the way.
So if I remove all 6 wires from the connectors all that will happen is that the socket in the bedroom wont work.
But the DECT phone plugged into the ADSL filter along with the router that is in the master socket will work.
All the phones around the house are DECT no wires needed.
The socket in the bedroom is now decorative.
Or am I about to monumentally screw things up?
And be left without phone or broadband!

DONT remove all 6 wires. Leave in 2 & 5. They should be the only ones needed.
You should be just left with 2 & 5 - White/blue & blue/white. I did it and it helped a lot.

I will leave the two wires.
I obviously don't understand.
I though ALL these wires were internal.
So how does the test socket work?
If I have removed the front plate from the box and plugged the router into the test socket how do I have connectivity to the outside world as the front panel (now hanging down) and the test socket are not connected, are they?

so the post from a previous poster who said
"Leave in 2 & 5. They should be the only ones needed as they come in from the outside line."
is mis-informed?
I was just going to use the test socket and hope the line speed built up to a faster level.
