Broadband or dialup?

That is what I am beginning to ask myself. My connection has been getting slower and slower for several weeks. It is not with all websites but most. This is always in the evenings. I understand issues with priortising traffic at peak times but with dial up speed on most sites I am now wondering what I am paying £21.99 a month for.
I know this is not a problem with my line as the router is synced with the exchange at its normal speed, currently 2784 and I am also able to download from my PN webspace at full speed. Shame about just about every other website on the internet!
I do download quite a bit but only through the night off peak and have never exceeded my usage allowance.

Re: Broadband or dialup?

Hi Sean
Have you tracerted to some of the sites you have tried?
Do they seem to be taking a similar route in terms of the PN peering connection that they are using e.g. Telia?

Re: Broadband or dialup?

While not addressing your problem, I do wonder why you are paying £21.99/month... I've just changed to the £9.75/month 10GB offer and was trying to imagine what you are getting for the extra?
I haven't check the prices for dialup recently, but do remember it used to be quite easy to run up some fairly high monthly amounts on PAYG.

Re: Broadband or dialup?

What I am getting is 16 hours off peak a day (12am -4pm). That is why I won't change to any of the newer packages.

Could you post a few traceerts to sites Sean so I and others could have a look?

Re: Broadband or dialup?

All of these are Akamai so they will be somewhat limited (though not sure how that affects your particular product)

Re: Broadband or dialup?

I understand limatations but the speed I am getting is completely ridiculous. About the same as dialup with the sites concerned. Little better now than earlier.

Re: Broadband or dialup?

£21.99 on the old peak limits, that must be Broadband Premier (if I remember correctly).
So it shouldn't be subject to the selective throttling dependent on where you visit.
Or to give it the official name 'download servers'?
(Never have understood the logic behind that product decision).

Re: Broadband or dialup?

What's the VP status of your exchange?  You can find out here.
If it's red that's probably the cause of your problem and you'll just need to wait until BT add extra capacity.
However, it could also be something to do with this.

Re: Broadband or dialup?

Sean,
How is browsing to non-download server sites?  The BBC for example?  Is that equally slow as the others that you're having problems with?
We are expecting to add further broadband capacity very shortly.

Re: Broadband or dialup?

bbc.co.uk is fine. It is only download sites. My exchange is fine. I can download from Plus Net at full line speed.
I have just came from a guys house after reinstalling XP for him. I downloaded and installed all the usual stuff. IE7, Adobe reader, AVG and updates etc etc. He is with Talk Talk at £10/month and this all happened at his line speed.
I am currently reinstallng XP on my own laptop and currently downloading AVG updates at 6.6Kbps on my own connection. I cannot bare to think what the rest will be like eg. Windows update.
I would like answers from Plus Net or I may be forced to go elsewhere. I am paying £21.99/month for broadband (premier option 1) and that is what I would like, not dialup. I do not want to hear about peak time restrictions because obviously Talk Talk can do it!

Re: Broadband or dialup?

I have been with Plus Net now for quite a few years. I have always been more than happy with my package. My static IP is invaluable to me and I wouldn't know where else to get one. The 16 hours off peak is also very useful which is why I have not changed from the old package. I really do not want to leave but after seeing the peak time speeds elswhere compared to the dialup speed I am experiencing on most sites I am at my wits end. Someone please help. Should I raise a ticket and report this as a fault?

Re: Broadband or dialup?

Are we still under Plan B (http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1232386625.htm)? That would explain slow downloads.
