Broadband dropping and terrible speed.

All,
I hope that someone can assist, whether from Plusnet or the community.  Having gone through the standard checks and proceedures on the Plusnet site I am getting increasingly frustrated paying £20 a month for something that doesnt work.
My problem happened once before , 1 month ago lasted a week and then disappeared.  For the last week the problem has come back.
I have been on plusnet for about 2-3 years.  My network setup and devices have not changed this year.
The problem is two fold and occured over the same time periods I mention above.   When I get a internet connection the speed is about .20meg upload.  for the last 2-3 years it is about 3.5 meg ( not superfast but enough for my needs).  However I frequently, as in every 10-20 minutes got a dropped signal the message I get on the browser is as attached .  I cant get the router to pickup the internet green light beyond a few mins and when it does pick it up the speed is .20meg upload.
When i reboot the router sometimes I get the broadband light green and then the internet light green, but more often than not the internet light remains dark.  I have tried all the standard stuff, and this has been going on for a week
changed microfilter
changed the port in the telephone box to the backup line
turn off all wireless
remove other device from network
reboot router
removed all other connections and gone via ethernet
checked phoneline for noise
i have tried to use a different router, but it is sky previous provider, and locked to sky, I cant flash it as I use mac os and there doesnt appear to be a way (that i can find) of doing it ( i dont have bootcamp or virtual windows).
edit - further
i am on snow leopard, have xbox, sky and ipad.iphones on the network.  the router is the standard thomson model (cant remember number at moment ) but came as shipped 2 years back and has the funny button the front that not a lot of people know what it does...
please can anyone help ?!?
Many thanks.

Re: Broadband dropping and terrible speed.

Have you raised a fault here http://faults.plus.net
Also can you post the information requested here for the community to help http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,96155.0.html
Also - what do you mean about backup line - do you have DSL supplied on two different phone numbers
A bit of an explanation of your phone/wiring setup would be useful

Re: Broadband dropping and terrible speed.

thanks oldjim,
i have not raised the full fault form as I am put of by the 'you will be charged for a engineer' statement and the only spare router i have is an old locked sky one.
i will check the typical info needed for community help,
cheers

Re: Broadband dropping and terrible speed.

Don't let the charge thing put you off raising a fault.
The charge is only if the fault is your side of the master socket but - and much more important - the potential charge only happens if you have an engineer visit not for the initial fault investigation and you can always decline an engineer call out later if you are really worried about that.
However the tests which Plusnet run may well spot the problem.
Now the next question - when the internet light goes out does the broadband light also go out or start flashing.
The reason for asking that is that if the broadband light stays solid you are getting a PPP drop not a line drop which points to a router problem

Re: Broadband dropping and terrible speed.

That tells me that you are on 20CN and that there must have been a really low sync recently
You should leave it in the test socket if you can as this will take your internal wiring out of the equation
It will take a couple of days fore the IP profile to rise

Re: Broadband dropping and terrible speed.

thanks for prompt response Jim,
actually I had it in the test socket for about 1-2 weeks, yesterday i put it back to the main one,
but neither one made any difference slow connection and random drops.  No drops so far tonight.
I have also raised a fault report as you said
cheers

Re: Broadband dropping and terrible speed.

The ticket number is 72021636, it's with our fault team who haven't yet had chance to get to your ticket unfortunately.
I've done a few checks myself and can see your line appears slightly more stable, if it remains stable we'll be able to place a SNR reset that may help things along.
Our faults team will pick this up and update you as soon as they can.
