Broadband Usage (Fault)?

I have just checked my broadband usage for this month and noticed that on Saturday 26/02 my paid for total was 1.77GB. I use, on average, between 200 and 600MB per day and when I don't use the net I put my pc into hibernation.I do all my big downloads after midnight when it is free. I phoned the Plusnet helpdesk and I was told that there were several large downloads during the day but I know for sure that I was out that day from about 11 o'clock and didn't return until after 6 p.m. The CS operator said that I should switch off the router for 24 hours to check that it is not faulty. I have a wired connection using a Thomson 560 router which has already been replaced once!! Is there anything I can do to prove that I did NOT use the usage and get a "refund"? I have found a little program called Networx to monitor the router but it is too late for last Saturday.
I have an outstanding fault query waiting to be fixed so if I switch off the router for 24 hours I will have to start all over again with that fault and of course I don't like being off line for 24 hours!!!
Any suggustions?
Thanks for any help

Re: Broadband Usage (Fault)?

Does that router have wireless capability? If so have you disabled it?

Re: Broadband Usage (Fault)?

No it is a basic wired type router with only one connector that I received from plusnet. If I had wireless then I could understand that someone had tapped into my pc and used it but that is not the case.

Re: Broadband Usage (Fault)?

During the day I put it into hibernation but I turn it off when I go to bed. But I leave the router ON all the time as I have been told to do.

Re: Broadband Usage (Fault)?

Sounds good to me.
Did they tell you the times of the large downloads? If not try asking, it would confirm if the download was when the PC was hibernated.

Re: Broadband Usage (Fault)?

I did, and there were 3 big downloads/uploads (they couldn't tell me which) when I definately was not at home. All they suggested was turn off the router for 24 hours to check if it is faulty. A whole day without the net!!!???  Cry
They said that was all they could do until it was confirmed the router was bad.

Re: Broadband Usage (Fault)?

Thanks Jojo for that.
I can discount the up/down between hrs o and 8 and that is where my problem starts. I left the house at about 10:30 or 11:00 a.m. and didn't come back until after 6p.m. and you can see that the up and down reverts back to somewhat normal amounts. I am just perplexed as to how the figures between 10 and 6 got there!
I always put the pc on hibernate when I go out and I live alone (sad) but I can't PROVE that I did not use my computer at those times, so I will have to accept it and just watch I don't go over my usage this month. Losing 1.77GB in one day is a hell of a lot. As you can see, I always do my large downloads after midnight. Oh well, nothing I can do about it!!
Thanks for the help Jojo and jelv

Re: Broadband Usage (Fault)?

Hi mexicano,
forgive me for maybe asking a silly question... As it was a Saturday, would anyone else have been using the computer while you were out?

Re: Broadband Usage (Fault)?

No, not a silly question: but there was no one here, unless they broke in without me noticing Smiley

Re: Broadband Usage (Fault)?

Oooo... What a good question Barry!
If you have given your old router to someone else you need to change the password on your Plusnet account and then change the connection password on your router to match.

Re: Broadband Usage (Fault)?

Hi mexicano,
You mentioned before that an agent had told you to switch your router off for 24 hours but 7 or 8 would do so if you go out for the day like last time then maybe switch your router off then and see what happens.
