Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

@Gandalf,

I have just run the BTW speed test on my laptop with W10 (home) and Internet Explorer 11.

It goes through the process of starting the test, but the download progress bar is stuck at the beginning and does not move.

So, it appears that BT have not completely fixed the issue.  Unless of course, I am doing something wrong.  If that is the case then I would like to know what and where am I going wrong (despite following the same procedure I had followed for some years).

Your comments will be appreciated.

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

Hi there

I have just run this "new" speed test and yes I do eventually get it to work. It takes nearly 5 minutes to go through the process. The download bar does stick for about 3-4 minutes and then starts to move to the halfway point.

The problem is that the old system took less than 1 minute to go though the process. BT seems to have managed to produce a new system that takes much much longer to get exactly the same info that the old system gave you.

Perhaps BT can tell us why they think this is better. The only reason I run it is that it is useful, to know what my IP profile is as I do not want fibre.

Regard

Chusan

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

Tried Safari on mac osx. (First time I ever ran Safari!)

Doesn't seem too bad, and "further diagnostics" worked. (To my considerable surprise.)

Compared to most other speedtest sites, download is about 6/7Mbps too low, and upload about 1/2 too high.

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

No longer seeing the upload anomaly, however it is still a tad low. Ditto with the downstream:

Latency is well out of whack compared to that of an alternative test too:

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

Hello Bob

I have seen your name around as a staff member of Plusnet for years ( I have been customer of PlusNet since 2001) and wonder why you think this new BT Test is better. As you can see from my last comment it now takes 5 minutes to complete rather than 1 minute before and gives no more information.

Regards

Chusan

No longer seeing the upload anomaly

Mine must be still wrong:

Edge v Firefox, tested a few moments ago

Edge v FF.18-08-18.PNG

PNH1 currently shows:

Data rate: 1434 / 27205
Maximum data rate: 1669 / 28212
Noise margin: 8.9 / 4.3

Edge showing slightly better ping.

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

Groundhog day:  Initial speed test reports 1.78Mbps upload speed on ADSL2+

Following Tap1 test then reported upload speed of 2.05Mbps (has been delivering believable results on previous occasions.)

I shan't bother posting any more tests unless Gandalf or another PN staff member asks for them.

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

@bobpullen you would see the upload anomaly alright if you'd been condemned to ASDL for life:

These tests were run from Edge in Windows 10, at about 12:30 today, and within 5 minutes of each other.

http://www.speedtest.btwholesale.com/

Download Speed(Mbps): 4.79 Mbps

Upload Speed(Mbps) : 1.29 Mbps

Ping Latency(ms): 52 ms

100 seconds to complete

http://www.speedtest.net/

Result ID 7561966127

Ping ms  33

Download Mbps 5.11

Upload Mbps 0.64

20 seconds to complete

The speedtest.net results are accurate as far as I can see from actual file download and upload speeds.

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

Testing this with Virgin Media cable and it appear BTw are spot on with cable broadband, how strange and got this:

Download Speed(Mbps): 388.83 Mbps

Upload Speed(Mbps) : 21.98 Mbps

Ping Latency(ms): 9 ms

VM 388/21VM 388/21

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

@chusan, where have I said it's better? Huh
I'm just reporting my experiences like others. In my case, the latency is over-inflated and both download and upstream results are marginally lower than they should be.

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

I am with BT and this issue was raised on the 12th. There has been a reply from one of the BT Moderators as follows

"The people who I contacted reported it directly to BT Wholesale. They are fully aware of it. We also raised it again yesterday. I would recommend using our own in house speed test: BT Broadband Speed TestOr visit the Android & IOS App Stores to download the My BT App. This provides the ability to test directly from the BT Home Hub." This was today.

Hopefully it will be upgraded to a non flash product which works with all browsers , because that definitely isn't the case with my BT connection as firefox and chrome wouldn't give accurate results starting late last year with firefox. Even now I get an upload speed of 14Mbps reported on a 55/10 line.

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

Hi

Try this speed test https://speedof.me/

This says it works with Firefox, Chrome and Edge etc. It doesn't use flash and is said to give you a true speed.

At the bottom of the web site screen you can click on "how it works" to explain all.

regards

Chusan

Re: BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test has changed

I tend to use Ookla then Thinkbroadband. Speedof.me has always tended to be on the optimistic side on speed especially upload which generally exceeds the IP of 10Mbps.
