Strange but not completely unheard of (although it's a long time since I did hear of that).
Did you report the crackles to your phone provider?

No, haven't reported the noise to BT yet: too busy with other things (e.g. an EON bill 300% more for Q2 16 than Q2 15 and we were away 60% of the time this year!).
Can't see having time to argue with BT for several days.

Very involved with other things BUT:-
This morning dropouts have been almost continuous.
SNRM now 11.8 and d/l bandwidth 15.31 - still dropping.
(I'll try to get BT out re line noise - can be heard by callers/called - asap).

Don't mention your broadband to them, just focus on the noise. Let us know when that's sorted and we can take a look at the stability then.

Connection now stable back to it's 18.5/1.09 speeds with no further issues - so it seems to have resolved itself
Thanks for comments

I believe it's www.bt.com/faults and then use the 'troubleshoot' options.

Thanks for that link, Chris.
It runs a test and says there's no fault. End of.
I think there's a number to call but I've been distracted so won't get round to it today.
Dropouts still happening.

Recent dropouts:-
17.14; 18.03; 18.13; 18.16; 18.23; 18.28 - I was on 17070/2 when the last one happened and line was silent.
No idea what to do now.

OK, PN, I now need advice.
This isn't line noise related.
As I said above, when the last dropout happened (two more since) I was listening to the line and there was no noise at all.
So, what can cause the connection to drop from SNRM 2.6 & d/l bandwidth 21.445 to 12.1/15.626 (even as low as 11) with near continuous dropouts?
Btw, PN, my line speed at your site is showing as 11.8.
Dropouts now happening every two to three minutes. Broadband unusable. Line still quiet.
Help!

Many more dropouts.
Last from 00.45 to 01.00. At 00.59 line was extremely noisy but went silent after 15 seconds of listening and router successfully connected.
SNRM/bandwidth = 19.8/10.899

You have discovered that the voice line is sometimes noisy - I think the first thing you need to do now is get that fixed. The fault, perhaps a bad connection somewhere, will still be present whether or not you can hear the noise at any particular instant. Perhaps record the noise somehow so that you can play it back to a visiting engineer in case it's not present when they are there.

Yes, I'm working on how to record noise before calling 151.
Note, though, that I have observed a dropout when the line was silent.
BB now close to unusable.
