thought the id's were different?
ASUS and ASUS 5G

You can set the same SSID. I assume its up to the device to connect to the better frequency.

My RT-N66U setting for wireless is as follows. Has been working flawlessly on both 2.4 & 5 GHz
Frequency -2.4
SSID - name entered
Hide SSID - no
Wireless Mode - auto - b/g protection ticked
Channel bandwidth - 20/40 MHz
Control channel - auto
Extension channel - auto
Authentication Method - WPA2-Auto-Personal
WPA Encryption - TKIP+AES
WPA Pre shared key - mix of letters and numbers
Network Key rotation interval - 3600

Cheers TBag, Found out that the issues were on firmware 3.0.0.4.260, which was the original firmware, my son had upgraded it to 3.0.0.4.354 to see if it resolved the wireless problems without me knowing. I've now replaced this with Merlin's 3.0.0.4.270.26, looking good so far, had no issues over the past 4 days.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

thought dd-wrt had a major issue with the QoS but found a way around it.
ive got my pc and ps2 wired and just use wireless for my tablets , phone and ip camera.
i set the qos rules and the lan ports dont work.
you have to reboot the router through wireless .....i realised this as last time i rebooted it with the on off button and it just wouldnt respond no matter how many times i did it.
after that the lan ports work !!!!

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

I've been using Shibby's Tomato-USB as I had no 5GHz Wifi under DD-WRT.
It's been great so far and addresses all my little issues I had with OEM/Merlin.
My only issue was that by default it ratelimits ICMP to 1 per second with a burst of 5 - this causes obvious problems with things like TBB QM.
A quick fix into Scripts -> Firewall solves it...

num=`iptables -L INPUT -n --line-numbers | egrep 'ACCEPT.+icmp.+limit' | cut -d' ' -f1`
iptables -R INPUT $num -p icmp -j ACCEPT
echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_ratelimit

Thought it may be useful to someone.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

If anyone is after one of these you can get it at currys/pcworld for less than £100 using code 10asusnet.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

Just got myself an N66U and upgraded to the latest ( 3.0.0.4.370_172 ) Asus firmware, and I'm loving it so far.
I wondered if anybody would like to recommend a reliable third party firmware to try?

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

There's a new f/w on the Asus site - Version  3.0.0.4.272
Seems to be based on the older wireless driver with some bug fixes.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

Hi there
I had been thinking of replacing the Thompson TG582n with an Asus N55U to improve the wireless signal. I am also interested in having a router that can be configured for better security and versatility. Most of the information online seems to refer to the N66U, which makes me think that it is more versatile than the N55U. I had assumed the only differences were that the one was for cable and the other ADSL..
Would I be better off getting the N66U and using my TG582n as an ADSL modem (and /or a second router firewall) or a TPLink TD-8817 ADSL modem? How well do they work together and what would I have to do to set them up with Plusnet?
Also, can anyone confirm whether Optware still works with the N55U and the N66U?
Thanks for any advice.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

Further to my post above, it looks as though Kong's build of DD_WRT sorts out the Optware issue.
Any thoughts on n55u vs the n66u? Any advice about using the TG582n with the N66u instead of purchasing a separate ADSL modem?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

I thought I'd check in here and say hi.
I've just bought and installed a N66U, currently running with a Netgear DG834G in "modem only" mode on ADSL2. FTTC is supposed to be coming to our exchange soon so it should then just be a case of swapping modems.
Early days yet but no problems so far Smiley

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

I've been up and running for a while now and everything seems to be running ok but I've noticed that my System Log - General Log is getting flooded with
Sep 27 08:16:39 kernel: br0: received tcn bpdu on port 1(vlan1)
Sep 27 08:16:39 kernel: br0: topology change detected, propagating
Sep 27 08:16:41 kernel: br0: received tcn bpdu on port 1(vlan1)
Sep 27 08:16:41 kernel: br0: topology change detected, propagating
Sep 27 08:16:43 kernel: br0: received tcn bpdu on port 1(vlan1)
Sep 27 08:16:43 kernel: br0: topology change detected, propagating
Sep 27 08:16:45 kernel: br0: received tcn bpdu on port 1(vlan1)
Sep 27 08:16:45 kernel: br0: topology change detected, propagating
Sep 27 08:16:47 kernel: br0: received tcn bpdu on port 1(vlan1)
- a pair of messages about every 2 seconds.
Is this normal or something I should be worrying about? Currently running stock firmware v3.0.0.4.276.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

It's an STP thing.
I think some versions of the Netgear firmware have it enabled and some don't. I don't know whether the Asus has an option to turn STP off. If not, it may be an option in one of the 3rd party firmwares.
Spanning Tree Protocol isn't needed in a simple home setup (it is intended to prevent routing loops where multiple routes exist) and if you have an Android mobile or tablet, for example, it will probably make the little incoming wireless activity arrow flash annoyingly the whole time too!

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

Do you have any wireless extenders/extra switches in your network?
I think that message is telling you there is a loop in your network.
Btw, there is a big fw upgrade (Version  3.0.0.4.374.720) that came out a couple of weeks ago.

Re: Asus N66U Users Thread

I think you'll find it's just a port state change because the Netgear is in bridge (ie. modem only) mode.
I presume vlan1 is the WAN port of the Asus and br0 is the combination of the Asus wireless and wired LANs.
