You would have been quoted a speed of 4 megabits per second (4Mb/s) which is equivalent to 500 kilobytes per second (500kB/s)
However
If you are actually getting those horrible speeds can you post your router stats - noise margin, speeds and attenuation

ISP's usually quote the expected speed in Mbits not MBytes.
4Mbps (Mbits) is the same as 500KBps (KBytes).

From http://www.thinkbroadband.com/download.html - Its taking 40 mins to download the 1 GB file.
http://www.speedtest.net/ ; gives the following - 2.98 Mbps DL & 0.35 Mbps upload.
http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ gives the following -
Download speed - 3.75 Mbps
Upload speed - 0.35 Mbps
Ping - 39.38ms
Oldjim - How would i go about getting my router stats?
I have found Youtube streaming to be an issue with frequent drops in connection. Also i receive regular lag spikes when online gaming sometimes with pings reaching 2000-3000ms.
Maybe as the other posters have said i have misread the download speed however i have never experienced speeds as low as this with any other provider. Is this likely to be what i can expect from plusnet for the forseeable future?

A quick way to the TG582n router is http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/dsl/dt/?ce=1&be=0&l0=1&l1=0
Just to add those speeds are more or less what was estimated and the calculated download speed for a 1GB file in 40 mins is
1GB = 8Gb = 8,000 Mb
40 mins = 2400 secs
So speed is 8000 / 2400 = 3.33 Mb/s
Which isn't too far from the estimate

The only other issue seems to be the lag spikes and drops in speed which could be a WIFI problem. Its getting late now so will have to look at this tomorrow morning and post an update then.

if not just go into firewall setting at the bottom of the page click (allow ping on your wan interface) and then of course enable. This should give you a good idea of what is happening along with the stats that Jim has asked you to post for the guys for monday when then they come back if you are still experiencing problems with your broadband.
WiFi can get tricky as well, it all depends on how much traffic you have around you as well as distance, in all honesty i wouldn't try to stream over WiFi any further than the back of my tv or whatever item i'm streaming to. also the BBC has a great little test which gives an idea of what is possible. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics i hope this helps even if only a small amount.
