Another speed issue thread

Just wanted to get an opinion on what you think might be going on here.
I’m fairly certain all this has started since the other week when they did the bandwidth expansion work on pcl ag02 gateway and since I've had crazily bad performance... When I first joined PN things were fantastic, I was getting steady 550kbs downloads, no disconnections... Now the speeds often terrible, worse than terrible! I'll say now there has been no hardware changes, filter changes etc.
My IP profile according to BT speed test is 4500kbps however I don’t think I've ever synced to anything less than 5500kbps, this evening in an attempt to see if it made any difference I rebooted my router and am synced at 6200kbps from 5700kbps which is normal.
This is my router line stats after this evenings reboot
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00
LAN 10M/100M 1244 0 0 213 0 00:26:24
WLAN 11M/54M/270M 51953 33813 0 40360 4432 00:25:57

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6208 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.0 db 23.0 db
Noise Margin 6.3 db 20.0 db

I think the best illustration of what’s going on with the up and down speed is shown if I just post my speed tests

Keep in mind during all this time I've been syncing at well above 5500kbps but have been stuck with a 4500kbps profile for ages. I know from past ISPs and the performance I have seen during my short time with PN that things can be great and that this isn’t normal.
I wouldn't be to bothered but I'm paying for the Pro service and I'f im not getting steady 4000kbps downloads I might as well not bother paying this premium Sad Your thoughts?

That's after plugging the router in at the master socket's test socket, where you take the face plate off and plug it in directly ruling out any extentions... not much of a difference at all, apart from my wireless N signal taking a nose dive in the office Tongue

Re: Another speed issue thread

Hi,
I've just had a look into this for you to see if I can spot anything obvious. There are a few things which could have caused slower speeds which I'll mention first, then look at other things it could be.
First, looking at your exchange speed history it's showing that it was red for capacity last month, you can check this yourself here:
http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges
Your speedtest results show there were reduced speeds on the 28th then it was normal last week, that tallies with the exchange history as it was red at the time of the lower speeds and green when it was OK.
Yesterday though is the exception, now there are a couple of things from yesterday that may have made a difference in speed, it was patch Tuesday so there was a lot of extra traffic on the network plus the change of Prime Minister caused an extra 50% of traffic on iPlayer, so both combined made for a very busy night.
I'd therefore be interested to know if the speeds were slow between 4th and yesterday and whether they continue to be slow.
We are looking if any of the work we've done recently could be related to what you're seeing. My first suggestion is that the next time it is slow run a tracert then disconnect/reconnect, retry the speedtest and the tracert and post back so we can see whether it's the same on 2 different gateways or different.

Re: Another speed issue thread

Thanks Dave, all of that sounds very logical.
I honestly can't recall if things were terrible between yesterday and the 4th, i'd probably say because I don't recall anything that things were fine or at least well enough for me not to notice any speed issues.
I'll of course continue to monitor it and will try and run some more tests this evening to see if there's any improvement now the new PM's in office but things were still a little slow at 7.30am this morning, I just just over 3900kbps but that does tie in with the 4500kbps IP profile.
Does it matter what I trace route too?

Re: Another speed issue thread

Speed tests have been a little better this evening but are still WAY below what they were pre late April
Today 19:53 4105 kbps (513kB/s) 377 kbps (47.1kB/s)
Today 19:47 3874 kbps (484kB/s) 379 kbps (47.4kB/s)
Today 19:43 4193 kbps (524kB/s) 377 kbps (47.1kB/s)
Today 19:19 2779 kbps (347kB/s) 377 kbps (47.1kB/s)
The top 3 results are exactly what i'd expect and hope to see on my 4500 IP profile, pretty weird how the first was so terrible.
I have to say though I was really narked to the response I got to my ticket, in contray to your reply here it was a completely unhelpful and showed a lack of compassion and willingless to take this seriously, not sure if you can check my ticket response or not as to why but it's really really angered me. I'd rather avoid making the drama in public for now as I am willing to see if things improve but it's really put my back up. I'll continue to monitor for now but so far after 7.43pm things have been brilliant.
