There is an argument that too many nitpicking actions annoys the users.

Then they should follow the link:rules
...but then I tried to enforce the rules stringently to prevent complaints of double standards as previous moderators had done.

Re: An important change to Moderator recruitment

To keep a slightly higher level of democracy why can't the current moderators make a selection more than the number required from whom we then take a vote?
Is this viable?

Re: An important change to Moderator recruitment

Say, two monderators are required. The current mods select three or more candiates that they deem to be suitable for the position.
The members of the forum then cast one vote for who they wish to see elected and the top two (in this case) get the job.
Does that make more sense? I did write the previous post a bit quick Smiley

Re: An important change to Moderator recruitment

Personally, I think it's a minor improvement.
But I still think it's a popularity contest.  The most liked members will get elected, which can mean that the better moderator candidate may not get a look in.
Am I making sense?

Re: An important change to Moderator recruitment

Obviously from my point of view I agree with that... but also, I think another consideration would actually be the number of suitable moderators. This forum seems to have considerable difficulty maintaining a good number of moderators at any one time, so I'm not sure there would be any surplus of moderating 'talent' available to make the idea work.

Re: An important change to Moderator recruitment

I believe that is right.
It has been suggested (and ignored) that the existing experienced moderators could bring in new moderators, with less or no experience.
These "apprentice" moderators could be trained over a trial period, managed by the senior moderators.
Using this approach would enable a wider choice of new moderators, of the right calibre, not just people who know how to moderate a forum.

Re: An important change to Moderator recruitment

Why not let anybody have a trial run at moderating?
Forums would then be moderated by a random selection of one's peers...
Bad moderators could be sentenced to an immoderate period of non-moderation  Smiley

Peace be with you however they are selected, unless of course the nit-picking returneth, then there would have to be considerable smiting, all manner of plagues, endless rain, storms and general Armageddon.  Angry

I seem to remember 'pestilence' quit the forum at 4.00am in the morning while simultaneously deleting posts and hurling his teddies out of the pram.  Shocked
