Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

Yes only one socket by the front door.
I would suspect it’s the original socket that was put in when it was built almost 30 years ago.

Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

Ok, so if you just confirm that you are now in that socket with nothing else connected and no extensions, I'll reset the SNR. Smiley

Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

Yes confirmed.
Also do you recommend leaving the router on 24/7?
And While I ‘m here, my exchange has 21CN WBC enabled. Is it worth pursuing a switch to ADSL2+ ?
Thanks again for your help.

Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

I would leave it on 24/7 for a while at least.
Until your line is shown to be stable I wouldn't switch due to the harsher error responses on 21CN
Can you report back the router stats tomorrow

Hi Visage
You're already on 21CN on ADSL1 and on the cusp of being beneficial for being switched to ADSL2+. Your profile has now increased to 4500 so you should see that change shortly.

Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

First of all thank you for your help, I originally  only inquired to see if there was perhaps a better package that might give me a bit more speed and that was only prompted by my son trying the new Onlive game streaming service.
Initially I did see an improvement of about 500 to 800 on the router settings and the BT speedtester showed a connection range above 7000, but it’s slowly come back down to close to the levels I had before but it does seam a lot more stable with not so much fluctuation, but the max connection range is now back to 4000.
I’ve moved back to the extension now as there really wasn’t mush difference in the results and it’s simply not practical to have the router in the hallway as I’d need to upgrading xbox’s and pc to wireless. FTTC is on its way to my exchange early next year, that may be my best option if  ADSL2 isn’t an option.
Thanks Again.

Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

ADSL2 is an option, but might not be beneficial with your line conditions and the increased target noise margin needed to maintain a stable connection. You could ask to give it a try, revert back to ADSL1 if it doesn't work out.
Could you post your current router stats - like those you posted in reply #4?

Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

This was the last time I checked at about 8AM this morning. I'm actually quite happy with the connection it was just my son asking what speed we were connecting that led me here.

Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

inside what?, he has a very old socket with nothing inside - I should know as I have one as well that is connected to an even old patch board but still get a synch of 13M on ADSL2

Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

Well I suppose there is no harm in giving ADSL2 a go if it’s not a hassle to switch back if it proves unreliable.
Nothing tried nothing gained. Smiley
Do I need to raise a ticket or can my request be picked up from here?

Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

the border line point is 4000Kb,  below that and the speed can drop.
Spraxyt is normally correct, but I dont think it is easy to switch back as it uses a different board in the exchange.  It wont harm to ask the question

Re: Am I stuck with 4000mb?

Assuming Plusnet are willing to action the change with changing back as a possibility, switching to ADSL2+ and back again to ADSL1 is relatively easy in this case since the service is already on 21CN and would remain so on switching back. If @Visage wants to give it a try, I don't see any reason not to, though speed benefits might be small.
I think raising a ticket/question to request the change with the possibility of reversal is the way forward. I'd include a reference to this topic.
