Re: AVG 8.0 Free edition

Installed yesterday for testing on both XP and Vista systems; OK so far.
Seems to use more CPU for some time at startup than 7.5 - hope it's not getting like Norton.....  Embarrassed

Re: AVG 8.0 Free edition

I'm running the free Professional version ( until 1st Dec 2008) so upgraded that to 8.0 yesterday ( 50mb download).
One thing I've spotted with this version is 4 hourly updates.

Re: AVG 8.0 Free edition

@HP Sauce
Thanks for the background info..... Have been using AVG for about 10 years now, and am 100% in favour of it.... Best thing since sliced bread !...
Would you keep an eye on the "loading time" that you mentioned? and report again in say 7 days, to let us know if it is indeed a longer loading time, or just that the "initial" setup/config has taken longer, as the "knowledge base" of viruses, has obviously increased over the years.

Re: AVG 8.0 Free edition

I'll try, but I rarely reboot my systems - usually on 24/7.

Re: AVG 8.0 Free edition

I have used AVG a lot in the past... the past being key here. I really did not get on with it at all. FOund it very intrusive (not in the good kind of way) and very slow. it would barely remove some of the spyware on a couple of my laptops.
I have now changed over to symantec coorporate 64bit install (due to the nature of my work i can benafit from the companies licenses on my home machines) the install is small, and it takes barely any system resources to run. also when there is an encouter with something malicious it just simply destroys it, with notification via a pop-up. Although it is coorporate software you can run it as standalone, however i like to vpn and let the main licensing and symantec server update my definitions on the fly.
I would really reccomend symantec and its virus sheild over avg, however the home versions (of symantec) are close to the worst protection programs around.
just my two cents

Re: AVG 8.0 Free edition

Are the Symantec programs the same price as AVG 8.0 Free edition?
Not sure why you raised spyware removal as an issue because AVG free is a virus detection tool only and you need a separate spyware detection program as well. I'm currently giving Spyware Terminator a go.

Re: AVG 8.0 Free edition

With the spyware i meant the software is equally good for both.
yeah the AVG is free, but so was the coorporate install of symantec for me.
I just get it free is i work from home sometimes and prefer to use my own machines, so from that i can get the approval to instal software under the companies licence you see.... deffo something for people to try, even if working from home is rare, it is still worth it for the company to give you top business level protection when using vpn etc.

Re: AVG 8.0 Free edition

Interesting that my free version only alerted me to the paid for version of AVG Sad

From the link jelv gave at the top of my page, the title says "AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0"

Re: AVG 8.0 Free edition

The pop-up alert for my install did the same thing.

Re: AVG 8.0 Free edition

It's always been harder to find the free version than the paid for version - they are a business!
