80/20 not available in your area

Hi all,
I was wondering why my 40/10 line hadn't been updated to the new 80/20 when I switched over (I got the 250GB usage allowance) and was told that it isn't available in my area yet. I was under the impression it was a national switchover and didn't require any cabinet/exchange upgrades?
Does anyone have a map/scedule of when/where the 80/20 service will become available?

It's more to do with the estimate on your line rather than the availability. Due to the line estimate of 31Mb, you are very unlikely to see an improvement on 80/20.

Re: 80/20 not available in you area

Oh okay. Thanks for clarifying. Does that apply for the upload; too?
I'm surprised the profiles aren't just automtically set when you upgrade. The upload profile was originally 2, it's now 10. Why not just set it to 20 and see what the router finally syncs at?
I am currently on a 35/10 profile (according to the BT speed checker), which just baffles me as I was syncing at over 36 download originally. Now it's capped at 35, I'm getting around 33 Mbps.
If it's not policy to set the profile to 80/20, could you please at least set it to 40/10?

I'm sure what you are seeing and what Plusnet are saying is that it has been set to 40/10. Plusnet don't set the BT profile, they just order a wholesale service, in this case 40/10. The slight loss of download speed maybe due to the increase in upload from 40/2 or it may just be normal variation.

Re: 80/20 not available in you area

Maybe it's the BT checker that is telling fibs then, as when I run it now it says:
IP Profile for your line is - 35 Mbps
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10 Mbps

...it was originally 40/2.
I'm not too bothered now TBH, as there is a healthy increase in the upload. I'm just curious why the profile isn't set to 80/20 by default for new customers, maybe it costs more and whatever small gain to the speeds may be achieved isn't worth it?

No it wasn't, the maximum possible BT IP profile for 40/2 is 38.72Mbps (96.79% of 40Mbps).

Re: 80/20 not available in you area

Ok thanks. Even at 38.72 though that is higher than it is showing now (35)?
Is the BT profile also affected by the upload setting? If not I still fail to see what has happened lol.
I'm not having a moan, It's just that on the current profile it looks like my download is being capped slightly.

Re: 80/20 not available in your area

Assuming you know it was 38.72 before then yes, it appears so. I don't think capped is the right word - that implies some sort of specific cap is being applied which I don't think is the case. You are still doing better than your estimate of 31Mbps so there probably isn't much you can do about it, and it does indicate that if you were moved to 80/20 you would not gain anything, and I guess might lose a little more on the download speed.

Yeah, I guess you are right. That download profile has definately changed though!
Thanks for the advice.
I can't complain as the speed has increased over 5x on the D/L and about 8x on the upload since switching over to fibre, but as humans we always want more  Cheesy

Not wishing to gloat, but my speeds have increased over 20-fold on download and 30-fold on upload in the last year or so!

Having studied my connection in some depth & experimenting with various Plusnet profiles, I can confirm that switching from 40/2 to 40/10 some months ago, switching back to 40/2 quite recently & finally switching from 40/2 to 40/10 again does affect DS sync speeds.
i.e. increasing US to "up to" 10Mb on my connection seems to deduct around 5Mb from my DS sync speed, from around 32-33Mb to 27-28Mb. US sync speed is now around 4.5Mb.

Re: 80/20 not available in your area

I think the 'trade-off' will vary with distance from cabinet but this seems to be solid proof that, below maximum sync at least, increased upstream speed can have an adverse effect on downstream speed.
This is rather like Annex M on ADSL but for slightly different reasons.
