I've been online all week.
About 1730 messages back to 06 Oct appeared again unread in my email inbox as duplicates. Just one mailbox. I raised a Question but don't know why this happened. Any ideas?

Odd.
I'm afraid that I personally have no idea why that might have happened.
Inthe nicest possible way, I hope it's just you!

Peter, do you use POP3 or IMAP for email collection and do you leave copies of your messages on the server? Do the duplicate messages have the same message ID in the headers?

As Bob is intimating, it's usually down to a combination of POP3, and leaving messages on the server. Sometimes, your mail account in your client can get corrupted and lose track of the UIDs of the messages that you have read.
With POP3, the 'already seen' status is held in your mail client. If you switched to IMAP this would be held centrally on the IMAP server, so is sless prone to corruption
