Re: 250Kbps broadband speed

I have been getting below 1400 (downstream) on my line since i reset my router yesterday and have just reset it again this morning and now i have over 3000 (downstream). Does it make a difference to my line speed after the first 10 days if i keep resetting my router to get a higher downstream on my line and how does BT work out my eventual stable line speed after 10 days?

Re: 250Kbps broadband speed

They generally set your Maximum Stable Rate (and thus Fault Threshold Rate) based on your lowest sync speeds in the ten day period.
That doesn't however affect the speeds at which your line is profiled on.  That's all calculated by the sync speeds that you obtain.
I'd defintely try connecting your router (via a filter) to the test socket behind your master faceplate if you have one, and see what sort of sync speed you get that way.

Re: 250Kbps broadband speed

Thanks for the info, so if I remove all the bell wires from the extension boxes, master box and fit a adsl nation face plate it will help speed up my connection?

Re: 250Kbps broadband speed

Sorry to Hijack the thread but i'd like to know what speeds I should be getting now I'm on the Pro package:--
Exchange Information
Distance:-  Direct:          5.91 km
(appx)*   By Road: 9.82 km
Status
ADSL enabled : July 23, 2003
DSL Max enabled: March 31, 2006
SDSL enabled : Not Enabled
21CN due : (PSTN) Phone No Required
21CN WBC (Broadband) Not available
BT Line Speed Estimation
Fixed ADSL:  2048 kbps  (2 Mb)
DSL Max :  5000 kbps (5 Mb)
21CN WBC : Not Available
RAG Test Results
Fixed: 1Mbps and 2Mbps available
radsl: 512Kbps and 256Kbps available
MAX: ADSL Max is available
SDSL: Exchange Not Enabled
TPON: TPON/Fibre not recorded
Check: No info available for this line!

So far (connected to Plusnet last Friday) the Max speed i've got is arround 600kbps am I right in thinking I should be downloading at around 5mb per second? Undecided

Re: 250Kbps broadband speed

Despite all that information what we really need is your synchronisation speed, attenuation and noise margin from your router

Re: 250Kbps broadband speed

How do I go about finding that out? I actually have a modem working as a bridge to my wireless router.
My router is a Belkin G+ Mimo F5D9230-4
The modem is a crappy free TalkTalk SmartAX MT882
Thank for any help Wink

Re: 250Kbps broadband speed

Why not use the Belkin as a router-modem and eliminate the SmartAX? The Belkin gives the stats on the "home" page.
If your line length from the exchange really is 9.82km (assumed equal to by-road distance) I'm surprised you'd get broadband at all. The BT estimate of 5000kbps normally goes with a line length of about 3.5km.
Also it is important not to confuse download speeds with sync speed. What BT quote are sync speeds, and for sync at 5000kbps the best download speed achievable with optimised PC settings is about 3500kbps.

Re: 250Kbps broadband speed

The router doesn't have a built in router (long story...) so until I invest in a new one I'm stuck with having to use both Sad
Here are some stats I've pulled from the modem (couldn't find the specific ones mentioned above though):-

The values Oldjim mentioned are those, and they are excellent. With a downstream attenuation of 27dB I reckon you must be no more than 2km from your exchange. And with Interleaving turned off should be able to sync at the maximum 8128kbps, but I suggest leaving that for now.
You should be able to download at 5500-6000kbps with those stats. First check that the Plusnet Data Transfer Speed says 6500kbps (the BTw IP Profile corresponding to 7616kbps sync).
I assume your computer connects to the router using wireless; make sure the wireless channel doesn't clash with one used by a neighbour (or checkout 1, 6 and 11 as alternatives).
Does your computer run Windows XP (or earlier)? If so tweaking RWIN (and possibly MTU might be necessary). You could try a tweak test at DSLreports (enter DSL, 8000, {your OS} and Normal to get the results). Please copy and post the URL given in small red letters near the bottom of the page.

Re: 250Kbps broadband speed

Thanks for your help, I'm actually using a mac running OSX 10.5. I checked my Plusnet Data Transfer Speed does say 6500
Here's the link with my results from tweak test:

Re: 250Kbps broadband speed

I'm not too familiar with Macs but they do have a self-tuning TCP stack and it seems to be coping well for you. The RWIN value is on the large side but the stack should manage this.
The download speed during your tweak test was 1944kbps which is typical for the test site (a test I did a short while ago gave 1907kbps using Windows XP with RWIN=128480 and MTU=1500, sync 7424kbps, and I don't have speed issues). Current result as follows:

What results do you get from the http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk checker?
