21cn question

Hey
My line was upgraded (finally) today and although it's running slightly slower I'm not here to complain because I know there is a 10 day training period. However I'm slightly puzzled by my new line stats!

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3681 kbps 888 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 25.9 db
Noise Margin 15.4 db 6.4 db

It's almost like the noise margin  downstream and upstream figures have swapped places. Also the connection speed was 5300 before the switched was flicked.
I was just wondering if this is normal.

Re: 21cn question

No, I would say something has gone wrong early in your training period.

Re: 21cn question

Ok....care to elaborate a little?  I was expecting a little extra dl speed but not a reduction.

Re: 21cn question

Is it just your line that has been upgraded or was it your whole exchange?

Re: 21cn question

It looks like your target downstream noise margin is now 15dB - what was it before the transfer to 21CN?

Re: 21cn question

Sorry to upset folks but the noise margin figure are upload first download second so 6 db is both good and normal
.
I would suggest you do a speed  check at www.speedtesrer.bt.com and there you will see your ip profile figure. Your d/l speed will never be above this figure.
But do not take much notice as you have just started your 10 day 'warm up'
Useful if done daily to see how line settles.

Re: 21cn question

It usually sat at around 5 db, some times even lower. 3 times higher cant be good!
My exchange was upgrade a month or so ago my line was upgraded yesterday. annoyingly since the exchange was upgraded my Internet has been running great(by my standards anyway)
I know it's a little early yet but I was expecting  improvements..:(

Actually they aren't
The 6dB is about what I would expect for an 888kbps sync (possibly a little higher - say about 8dB) and the a speed of 3681kbps with a noise margin of 15dB is also about right but horrible.
I went onto ADSL2 with about the same attenuation and these were my stats
Mon 28 May 2012  11:24:56 Rx-Noise=6.2 Tx-Noise=7.5 Rx-Sync=4387 Tx-Sync=888
and I had massive instability.
I went back to ADSL1 and this is the current situation with a 6dB default noise margin
Downstream
Noise Margin:    3.7  dB
Connection Rate:  4928  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 51.0  dB
Upstream
Noise Margin:    23.0  dB
Connection Rate:  448  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 25.5  dB

Re: 21cn question

Ok so where do I go from here? Give it ten days, raise a ticket or admit defeat and swap back? Can I even do that btw? I have a setting in my router which gives me my adsl selection (currently set to auto) but obviously it can't be that easy.

Re: 21cn question

Don't  panic; you are worse off but not dreadfully slow and the faster upload might come in handy.  You really need to establish if you can get a stable connection under ADSL2+.  Since moving to ADSL2+ myself, I have been using a program called RouterStats Lite http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/betatesters.htm to track how the noise on my broadband varies.  I was able to identify a computer that was causing problems.  I can see that my noise level is 1 or 2 dB worse at night but that noise spikes or disconnections are rare.  I recommend you try this to see if there is any indication why your target SNR has become 15dB.

Re: 21cn question

Lets see where things go after the line training period, I can appreciate the line stats might not look ideal at the moment but the period is there to help make sure the service is performing in a stable manner as possible for your line. If there's no change or improvement after that do let me know.

Re: 21cn question

Ok. I guess I'll just see how it goes. Seems fairly stable despite my horrid stats and like the guy said I ain't really that much worse off, just a bit disappointed. I knew that any improvement based on my line stats would be quite small but wasn't expecting a step backwards. Typical that the people with the worse lines see no benefit from been upgraded!
