128 kbps Only on an upto 8mbps connection

Can anyone help?  I have changed BT Router Voyager firmware.  Checked the phone line, which is ok.  Checked the socket, which is ok.
Plusnet don't know why I have this pitiful download speed.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Re: 128 kbps Only on an upto 8mbps connection

Have you exceeded your usage allowance? BBYW limits your speeds to 128Kbs when you do?
Can you post a BT speedtest result so we can see sync rate, IP profile and data throughput rates?

Re: 128 kbps Only on an upto 8mbps connection

Hmm.  Oddness.
I've checked from both our and BTs end to see how your line is being profiled.  From a traffic management perspective, your line is being profiled as it should be for your product and you haven't exceeded your usage allowance.  From the BT end, you're on a 2500Kbps profile, so you shouldn't be seeing the speeds that you are!
I would be grateful if you could run a BT Speedtest to see whasort of results that gives.

Re: 128 kbps Only on an upto 8mbps connection

Hi
Details are (taken on the 21 march 2008)
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 750 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  896 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 609 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Re: 128 kbps Only on an upto 8mbps connection

Can you provide the attenuation/noise margin/speeds from your router as this may give a pointer as to why you have such a low speed.
This link explains how to get them http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm

BT's Dynamic Line Management kit has reduced the throughout off your line to 750kbps

You are only synchronising with the exchange at 896kbps. Whilst it's like this you're download speed will not increase. Try rebooting your kit to see if this value increases.

If the reboot increases your sync speed and you remain connected at a higher rate, then your download speed should increase again after a few days.

Re: 128 kbps Only on an upto 8mbps connection

OK, obvious question that's not been covered yet - are you new to this, or has it been significantly better in the past?
If so, what has been changed since it was good, and how good was it?

Thanks to all.

Re: 128 kbps Only on an upto 8mbps connection

I would phone PlusNet support and tell them the figures you've just posted - they certainly look very odd indeed.
If there's a fault it could be in lots of places, though the router is maybe one of them. As is your wiring, the filter(s), phone line, exchange equipment etc.
Have you used Kitz' Broadband Availability Checker at www.kitz.co.uk ?
Enter your phone number and postcode and it gives you an estimate of your potential speed and distance from the exchange etc. Post the results back here please.
With the attenuation shown you are maybe 2.5Km (is that right?) from the exchange and should in theory get up to 6Mb or even 7Mb speeds.....

Re: 128 kbps Only on an upto 8mbps connection

OK, so you should be getting nearer 4Mb, so something is horribly wrong.
Definitely time to call PlusNet, though I did read somewhere that they have a dedicated "speed issues" team that are not around 24*7, so you may have to wait for in-depth investigations.
They'll probably start by asking you to plug in your router & filter at the BT master socket having disconnected all internal wiring by removing the faceplate. Might as well try that yourself if you know how and see if the sync speed improves..

Re: 128 kbps Only on an upto 8mbps connection

With a 25dB downstream margin at that sync rate it very much sounds as if there's some intermittent interference with the ADSL signal.
Whilst it could be many other things, I'd recommend taking a very careful look at whether you've got a faulty filter, a device on the line without a filter, or any part of your phone line running close to a source of interference.
1.5km from exchange ought to give at least 4Mb...

Re: 128 kbps Only on an upto 8mbps connection

Hi aw14,

Noise Margin    25.6 dB

That's the worrying bit.  I'd try changing your filter and making sure that you are connected directly to the master socket via that filter and that all of your used telephone sockets have a filter connected to them.
When Bob talks about DLM, this is BTs profiling system that they use to profile connections based on the connection speed with the exchange.
