Problem sending email

Although I went over to Greenby when Plusnet made us go, so that is a few months back, my wife hasn't had to send an email from her laptop until today, and guess what, it didn't work. I have attached a screen print of the error message. Please would someone tell me what I have to do on my wifes pc to fix this.

So what do I need to do? I can send from my pc without problem. Its just my wife's laptop that has a problem

Are you using the same domain as the FROM address ?

or are you using a <mailbox>@<account>.plus.com format address ?

The Greenby server will not allow you to send from a private domain address.

Where is the domain hosted ? you need to use the domain hosting providers mail server

Have a look at the SPF and the MX sections that may give a clue to the expected SMTP servers :

Hello @PhilipHeyes . Sorry but I've just taken a look at where your link took me, and it might as well be Greek for all I could understand it. The sender of the email is my wife, the scouts address is the recipient. My wife is an assistant leader at our local cub pack

For your own email account, Plusnet SMTP relay.plus.net is an intended SMTPs for a <mailbox>@<account>.plus.com address & hence it works.

The MX Record show email for this domain are routed via Google's email servers.

The MS Outlook config

The MS Outlook account that is not sending, is it successfully collecting emails from the mail box : <name>@christchurchscouts.org.uk ?

If it is, a clue as to which SMTP email server to use may be in the MS Outlook configuration. For example if the inbound mail is working via pop.gmail.com or imap.gmail.com the SMTP server is likely to be smtp.gmail.com and SMTP usually expects the same credentials as the pop3 / imap server.

I'd missed that in the errors.

On your wife's email, If you changed the SMTP from relay.plus.net to mail.enmail.co ( it is .co not .com )
does the email send ?

Hello @MisterW & @PhilipHeyes Sorry for the slow response. I have just tried sending an email from my wife's laptop to my pc. First of all I have found her laptop has a weak connection to our wi-fi so sometimes her laptop is connected to it and sometimes it isn't (you only have to move the laptop a few feet to make the difference). I cannot move the router to nearer her laptop - there isn't room to place it where it is safe - and the same problem exists for her laptop - it cannot be moved to nearer the router. Not sure how I can fix that problem - is there such a thing as a wi-fi booster, and if so, what problems might that cause? Its strange that the wi-fi connection to the back room is iffy, but the connection to a pc that is upstairs and across the width of the building is reliable.

She is also using Windows Live Mail, which I have never come across before. The email she sent that caused that error message is still in her Outbox, not in the Sent list, and neither of us know how to persuade it to move on, so some help there might be useful. I have tried a test message from her pc to mine and that is now in the Outbox too.

Try using SMTP : mail.enmail.co

If needed reopen the email stuck in the outbox and then click on send.

I don't have a Windows Live Mail so I can't give a list of steps.

My unreliable memory tells me that I had to do something similar to get my emails working when I moved to Greenby back in February. However, having checked my accounts (two of them) on Thunderbird, the SMTP there was something like

"<account>+< name> - mail.plusnet.enmail.co".. Obviously the <account>+<name> bit was different in them

That is slightly different to what you suggested, and I'm being cautious because I'm not computer savvy. Therefore, am I looking at the wrong place for the SMTP, or do I need to add the word plusnet to your suggestion?

For Greenby the Username needs to be the email address of the mailbox : <name>@<account>.plus.com

Greenby usually does not use the old Username format : <account>+<name> & I would avoid an alias too.

The out bound email server aka the SMTP server in the configuration as this thread started contained relay.plus.net

Try replacing relay.plus.net with mail.enmail.co

The What do I need to do? section is the key bit.

To send email we recommend that you enable authentication for outbound email.
For customers with a Plusnet, Force9 or Free-Online email address you should use your main mailbox username and password in the outbound settings.
For Callnetuk, Care4free, Dialstart, Freenetname, Globalnet, IC24, ICScotland, Madasafish, Totalserve or Totalise and Metronet you should use your email address

So, does that mean for Plusnet, Force9 or Free-Online to send from an email client all mailboxes and aliases should all use main mailbox username and password for the outbound settings?

E.g. for email addresss beginning name1@username and name2@username instead of username+name1 or username+name2 as outbound settings both would now use just username and its password as the outbound settings?

@njay Enabling authentication is done at the base level of your account. i.e on your outgoing server settings tab on your mail program. Do you use a client program, or just webmail?

I use both

In plusnet webmail i can login to each mailbox independantly with username+name1, username+name2, etc each with their own password

On client i can do the same, as whilst incoming and outgoing settings can be independantly set, currently they are set the same alebit with different ports/encryption

What i was referring to is that the details provided on plusnet migration faq changes that to all mailboxes using just main username and password as outgoing settings

The credentials for outgoing can be any valid set i.e a mailbox set or the main account set, they dont have to match the incoming ones. That's always been the case.
