Ring doorbell - connecting to 2.4ghz

Hello,

I recently upgraded my package and have a new hub. I have not been able to get my ring doorbell (2nd generation) to connect to the wifi.

I have gone into the network settings and turned it to mode 3, which also has not worked. In addition, I have switched off the 5ghz, which didn't help the ring doorbell, but also meant that my phone would not connect to the wifi.

Is this a lost cause... if so can anyone recommend a 5ghz compatible doorbell which does not cost too much.

I upgraded to full fibre 300 and have a hub 2 box - I’m struggling to remember what I had before!

Ah! , I was hoping that you had not upgraded to quite a high speed product and that you had a Hub one previously.

The Hub one will work on a Full fibre connection and will handle the 300Mb download but will limit the upload to around 30Mb ( your FF300 has the capability of 50Mb upload ). The advantage of the Hub one is that the wifi bands can be split (with different names) whereas on the Hub 2 they can't. Some devices that are only 2.4ghz capable can't cope with the two bands having the same name.

Rather than buy a new doorbell, it might be simpler ( and possibly cheaper ) to get a third party router that can have the wifi bands split. You would need to do a little configuration of it but its not too difficult.

I have a Ring Doorbell 3 Plus on a FF1000 connection with a Hub 2 without any issue.

@Grace3 Wild early morning thought, and I have no experience of Ring doorbells, but do they need factory resetting so they 'forget' your previous router?

For what it is worth, I always moved the Wireless name across to a new router, this would hopefully negate the need to setup a device again.

Three routers later with Ring cameras and various other IoT 2.4GHz device everything has continued to work faultlessly.

@Grace3 If you see this before trying to (re)-connect your doorbell, temporarily turn the 5Ghz channel off whilst trying to connect it, and then re-enable it once connected. I just checked the specs, and it is 2.4Ghz compatible only.

Hi John - I had an issue doing this as when I turned off my 5ghz network (and restarted the router) it seemed to make my entire WiFi stop working, and my phone was not even detecting it

Is that even though your router is ‘dual band’?

@Grace3 You only need to turn the 5Ghz band off whilst you connect the bell- after factory resetting it, and then turn it back on once the bell is working.

BTW - It is a good idea to either 'tag' or mention the person you are replying to in your reply.
