Hello.
We have just had Plusnet full fibre installed after having regular broadband with sky. My son has a PC upstairs which he uses for gaming. He always needed to connect a tp link to the Ethernet port of the old hub downstairs with another tp link plugged in his room upstairs as we don’t want Ethernet cable all up the hallways and landings etc. Worked fine with the old broadband but not getting good speeds at all with full fibre. We have the Plusnet Hub Two. Is there a specific tp link he should use?

Is your son in the room above where the router is or elsewhere in the house?

I ask because ethernet cables are best, especially for gaming. Though you don't want to run cables indoors you could get someone in the run the cable externally. Not the cheapest option but gives you a solid starting point upstairs and is future proof.

He does attach an Ethernet cable to the tp link from the hub two (the yellow port). I’m not keen on having cables inside or outside the house lol. Well, not unless he pays for it but he’s likely to move out in the next couple of years and it did work ok with regular ‘slow’ broadband with sky. It’s a shame as he was really looking forward to having decent speeds at last but it’s actually no better, maybe even worse. His room is next floor up but not directly above the room with the router but it is on the same side of the house.

It looks like I threw away the Ethernet cables we had been using. Will the thick white Ethernet cable that came with the Hub Two be suitable to connect to the powerline adapter from the router? I note different cables have different ‘CAT’ numbers on them and I’m not sure if that makes a difference. Also, can the powerline adapters be paired whilst in separate rooms or can I do it from the locations they will be used?

The ethernet ports on the PA4010 are limited to100Mbps by design, so any CAT5 cable or above should work.

Probably easier to pair them next to each other as they can viewed during the process.

There is a windows app "TP PLC utility" which can be used and is found here

As dan said, the PLA (power line adapter) in question has a 100mbit ethernet port.

You basically have 3 options

a) get a gigabit pla, look for av1000+ plus systems, around £60 plus. Of course how new your wiring will directly affect speeds.

b) try using a wifi mesh system

c) as much as you don't them, have an external ethernet cable going up to your son's room in a conduit behind the guttering.

Personally i'd go with the external conduit route, as thats two holes which can be repaired very quickly after removal.

I suspect external cabling wouldn't break the bank - perhaps less than £100. The main decision would be whether to terminate the cables in ethernet wall sockets or just run the cable into the room with wall plugs to cover the hole in the wall. The latter would be quicker / cheaper.

All that's needed is two drills to take the cable out and then back in. run the cable, tack it to the external wall, fit wall plugs and then fit the ethernet connectors. I'm not a tradesman but I can't see it taking more than an hour. Just make sure good quality external ethernet cable is used.

As previously stated it gives a strong starting point upstairs and is future proof. I would phone a couple of local companies to get a rough qoute.

@SMB thanks for responding, in many forums people quite often don't reply to threads.

With the AV1000,1200,1300 or av2000 ones the biggest constraint is the house wiring. getting 100mbits (assuming thats via a speed test) is pretty good for av600.

I would say getting 500mbits from even av2000 is pushing it.

i was doing 30 to 60 on av600, sometimes into the low 10s
