Google requesting me to verify my email address

I have received an email, supposedly from the Google Accounts team. It is requesting I confirm my email address. Their email not only includes my email address in the message, but also includes a code to verify it. I am suspicious. Is it a phishing email? Why would Google want me to verify my email address? At the moment, as I user Mailwasher to check incoming emails, this email is still on, I guess, a Plusnet server waiting for me to collect it.

Anyone with wiser heads than mine (I suspect that is everbody) know if this email is okay or should I just delete it?

Whilst it is still on MW, can you check the actual address it is from? It could be genuine, although from memory I don't think I have ever had such an email.

I've never received an email like it before, either. How do I check the actual address? I've heard rumours of being able to do this, but have never found out just how it is done.

If it is still on MW, right click it in the 'status' column and select 'view complete header' from the drop-down.

Okay, I've tried that. There's a lot of lines of coding, but nothing that I have found that seems to be a different sender email address other than one that ends "@idverification.bounces.google.com". The top line is "Return-path" The second line starts with a long run of gobbledegook that ends with the "@idverification.bounces.google.com".

It just seems strange that Google want to check my address

That sounds like a genuine Google email to me - but why they've sent it, only they know.

PS I now have three of those emails supposedly from Google, judging by their time stamps two of them seem to have come as a result of me doing what jab1 suggested

I'd never trust an email like that to be genuine

If I was you I would look at your account settings here https://myaccount.google.com/

Personal Info would be the place to check email address.

I had to log in to Google using an old gmail account I haven't used for years, it wouldn't let me log in to Google using my plusnet email address. Having logged in, I couldn't spot anything odd in my personal data. It new my plusnet email address, but it seems to only be for contacting them if my gmail account has a problem

Its the plusnet address the emails sent to me are asking for verification - why verification, and why after all this time?

Quick reply, as it is lunch time and then I'm out for the afternoon. @penneck , unfortunately as you sent that from the recycle bin, all the 'original' header detail was lost, so I'm afraid I can't verify the authenticity of the message - sorry.

Now and then I receive messages asking me to contact the tax man, contact the bank etc usually with the suggestion of money owed to me. Just try to contact the tax man or the bank, after hanging on for an hour or two consider how likely these people are to call YOU. I'd treat this Google mail the same way.

Sorry about that. When yoiu asked me to forward the message, I hadn't realised I had deleted them, so had to go to the recycle bin to get one. As wityh many things, I hadn't realised the knock-on effects of that

Yes that is how I felt about the original email, but I thought I couldn't be the only person to receive it so I thought I would ask the experts.

Can I email Google customer service for help?

support@google.com is the official email address of Google to which you can raise the issues and help them find a solution for the queries. You can get their aid and be availed of the resolution you are looking for.

You must draft the issues well so that you can get hold of the aid you are looking for.

IIUC This is a secondary account recovery email address: verification of that (the address is correct and the user proves access to it would seem to be a very pragmatic wise move. There'd be nothing worse than finding out one could not access the primary email account ... and then find out the back up recovery route does not work either!

Yes, as far as Google is concerned the address they wanted to verify is my secondary address. The email I sent them to ask if the verification request email was genuinely from them was from the address they want to check. I wonder if they will notice that
