Just wondering if new FTTP -including upgrade to- from any provider, one would be allocated an IPV6 address. Or are there still enough IPV4 around or in providers' blocks.

It depends....

I've not heard of anyone on Plusnet not getting an IPv4 public address, however if you go to an "altnet" it's quite often GCNAT on IPv6 and (usually) IPv6.

If either a public IPv4 or IPv6 matters to you then a bit of research is highly recommended.

Many users would be happy with what they get from any provider (Openreach based, Virgin Media or an Altnet) but if you have specific requirements it's well worth checking before entering into a contract.

If upgrading with PN on the OpenReach network you'll not get an IPv6 address. PN are currently trialling IPv6 addresses with a view to introducing them at a (probably much) later date.

As stated for other ISP's you'd need to check what they offer.

thanks - and bmc

Yes, I understand where there might be a Static or Dynamic IP allocated.

There was also then what one might need to do in router setups and does it make any overall difference for the router security options?

I did an upgrade from VDSL to "Full Fibre" (FTTP) with Plusnet and the process was very smooth.

For many purposes a public IPv4 address (as Plusnet provides) will suffice.

Plusnet on Full Fibre is still PPPoE, the only difference I saw with my router is that the Openreach ONT does the VLAN tags so the router doesn't have to.

I didn't see any requirement to change any router security options (I have a Draytek).

The easy answer to your qustion is: On joining Plusnet you will be given access to a pool of dynamic IPv4 addresses, So yes, there are sufficient IPv4 addresses still available.

Currently, IPv6 iaddresses are not available from Plusnet as a standard option, neither is a fixed IPv4 addres..

@fishtank that's correct. Dynamic IP addresses on FTTC & FTTP are allocated from 'local' pools at the BRAS whereas on ADSL they were allocated directly by the CP.
