Hi Forum,

I have an issue that has started recently on my Windows 10 computer. My computer doesn't automatically connect to the PlusNet Full Fibre wifi when I turn it on. It says "No Internet. Secured."

I Disconnect, and then tick the box for Connect Automatically, but it still doesn't connect to the internet.

The only way I have found to resolve this is:

- right-click the Internet connection from the bottom-right taskbar arrow menu

- select Troubleshoot Problems. I select Wifi and run the Network Adaptor troubleshooter.

- Once it has run, I select Network Reset, and the computer restarts.

- When the computer has restarted, I locate PlusNet, type in my Wireless Password Key, and then it connects to the internet.

There are no issues with the internet connection itself, the HubTwo Router is blue, and mobile phone devices can connect to the wifi with no problem, it's just the computer.

There must be a simpler solution, but I can't find one!

Any help is much appreciated.

I don't know the answer to this, but the issue sounds very similar to this one: https://community.plus.net/t5/Tech-Help-Software-Hardware-etc/Internet-connection/m-p/1955455

Wonder if it is anything to do with the Windows OS. Just a thought, and not one I can really troubleshoot, as I don't use Windows.

Hi @bird99999
Based on seraching the internet, I suspect it is the computers WiFi driver.
For example Method #3 on:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/fixed-windows-10-wifi-connected-but-no-internet/82573aa3-cebb-45df-9d0d-e90d68cab40d
Look in the device manager for the WiFi card type and check the driver version.
Another approach would be see if there is an optional WiFi update in the Windows update.
Regards
RIchard

The thing that has caught me out from time to time when I have switched routers (but kept the same SSID,) make sure the windows network properties are the same - when windows detects a new WiFi/Ethernet adapter MAC on the router it configures it as a new public network with associated restrictions for a public network.

Thanks for the replies, any help is appreciated.

@jab1, Yes, my problem does seem to be the same one that you linked to, but the replies on that thread don't resolve my problem.

@RichardB, all my drivers are up-to-date and the problem still persists.

@Ian06, this is a problem that has appeared over the past 2-3 weeks, but I have been with PlusNet for several months now without any previous problems. When the new WiFi pop-up boxes appear, after I restart my computer, I select the option for Private Network, and set is as a home network for a personal computer. Are you suggesting that I should set it as a new Public Network instead?

Thanks again!

It's probably also worth checking the network is set to automatically be joined when in range.

Just highlighting access problems I have previously had when I have swapped routers (or access points) that have a new (unrecognised) MAC, it may be completely irrelevant in your issue....

If you don't use Nord VPN ignore the following, though I guess it might apply to other VPN's - I don't know as I've only ever given Nord a whirl.

Also this occurred when using three different Plusnet Hub Ones and a BT Smart Hub (they all did this for reasons I have no explanation for) although all 4 routers were running off my phone line. So my physical connection to Plusnet was the only common factor.

“No Internet, Secured” means that your connection to the Wi-Fi part of the Plusnet Hub is fine and adequately encrypted (hence Secured)

My only solution was to ensure Nord wasn't starting on boot up.

I'd switch the laptop on, allow it to connect to the WiFi, then start Nord, pick a country and then open a browser.

I've either forgotten or never found out why this did this but it had worked for months perfectly fine (with Nord starting on booting up the laptop) before this started happening and have since dropped Nord as I really didn't use it that often.

When my Son lived at home he had this a few times using Nord on his gaming PC too and after several Nord updates his stopped popping that message up - again could it have been an update from Nord???? or something on my Plusnet connection???? Or something else, but 2x device, 4x routers all did the same, most odd indeed

I'm going to guess to say that Nord tried to connect to the WWW before the device had connected to the router <STRIKE>had made the connection</STRIKE> first. As I said Nord worked fine for some time, then the errors, then 'my fix' and then I'll never know if it would ever come back.

edit to add text in blue and to strike out the bit that could have been written better

I was trying to say that Nord was possibly communicating before the PC (sons) and Laptop (mine) had established a WiFi connection to the router or vice versa

Also I should point out my Son tried using ethernet and this too would sometimes not connect to the www.

@DS Having NORD , or any other VPN running on start-up is likely to cause issues if it started before your connection to the PN network was completed, as it would be, possibly, trying to connect whilst presenting Nord IP's before it had connected to the PN network - i.e. the connection would appear not to be coming from your computer but from another, possibly located outside the UK, which would be rejected.

Just my thoughts, and the reason I would never have it set as a program to load at start-up.

Thanks again to all of you for your help with this.

@Ian06 I have the "automatically connect when in range" switched on, so this probably isn't the cause.

@DS and @jab1 I don't use Nord, but I do use BitDefender and it does start up automatically. It's never been a problem until 3 weeks ago, but I can try switching it off on start-up to see if this resolves the issue.

@jab1 Yup, I was aware of that. It was just that, as mentioned above, it worked fine and my laptop had been connecting happily for several months (with Nord starting at boot up) and Nord had no effect on my connection during that time, then 'sumfink' changed.

And although I never had Nord set back to start on boot up, my Son eventually did and reverted back to having Nord running at boot up without the no internet message.

@byrd99999 Never tried BitDefender so couldn't comment, but I'd certainly try what you're trying, even if it rules it out.

(so I've had a quick look) and yes John you're correct

However, if @byrd99999 is using Bitdefender Total Security from what I've briefly read this also comes with a ................... built in VPN

Now I'm not saying if byrd99999 is using B-T-S with the VPN running is the cause, I can only relay my hiccup with the VPN from Nord.

@DS Thanks for that information, but to my mind, that built-in VPN should be disabled by default, as its unintentional use could cause unintended problems - not just at start-up (if it is active) but also if someone, say, was attempting to do online banking, it could cause the banks security system to reject the users login, as may appear that the attempt was being made from a suspicious location.

Thanks again, everyone, for your input.

I think I've found a solution. I applied it 2 days ago, and haven't had an issue since, so fingers crossed...

I do use BitDefender Total Security, and I use the VPN that comes with the package. As I mentioned, I never had a problem before until recently, and I've never had a problem with internet banking or making payments.

Basically, I changed the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and the back up to 8.8.4.4 and that seems to have done the trick.

This solution is the first solution in the link posted by @RichardB :
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/fixed-windows-10-wifi-connected-but-no-internet/82573aa3-cebb-45df-9d0d-e90d68cab40d

Except, I followed the BitDefender method of changing my DNS Server (varies slightly from Richard's link but the end result is the same), by using the following link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=4&v=u05mEXGc8uQ&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bitdefender.com%2F&source_ve_path=MTM5MTE3LDI4NjY2&feature=emb_logo

Just FYI, I still have BTS and Vpn enabled at start-up.

Thanks again for everyone's help!
