I am more than happy with my present system but have got to wondering about the ONT.

I am toying with the idea of getting a UPS (uninterruptable power source) for my system, router and VoIP telephone adapter.

But all those are in my living room and networked to the ONT in the hall.

I know Openreach used to supply a battery back-up for the ONT but mine hasn't got one.

I am looking for advice for the best option here.

@Eggs

Sending power from the UPS to the ONT might be possible via a passive PoE adapter set through the Ethernet connection between the router and ONT providing you can get the correct size connector for the ONT.

e.g. this type of kit (although IDK if that is the correct sized plug);

Passive Low Voltage RJ45 POE Injector Set

EDIT: I'm referring to the type of low voltage DC-battery power source used for backup, not the more common type which provides mains-level voltage.

You make a very good point @RichardB and something I hadn't considered.

A search found PoE splitters which claim to be Gigabit capable, so perhaps one of those at the ONT end of the connection would be suitable, which would obviously need a <STRIKE>DC-powered</STRIKE> Gigabit PoE source at the router end, be that a switch or injector.

e.g.

You could have a look at the following

https://b4rn.org.uk/support/helpful-documents-and-guides

There are 2 documents on UPS. Not certain how up to date they are.

B4RN is a small community owned ISP and the Help page relates to their supplied equipment but the general principles will be the same. Note that their ONT is passive and the work is done by the router which is connected by fibre cable to the wall ONT.

The cheap passive PoE adaptors seem to use two of the four Ethernet pairs for the power.

Only the remaining two pairs are used for the data.

Hence the 100 Mbps limit.

Active PoE uses all for pairs for data and supplies 48V to power the active PoE to 12V splitter at the remote end.

The cheapest solution might be to run to Ethernet leads to the ONT, one for Data and the other for PoE?

Apologies for resurrecting a relatively 'oldish thread, but wanted to shout out to @Eggs that'd the 1VA units are great. I appreciate they are relatively expensive but they are the perfect solution to your problem.

I run three at home, one on my ONT, one on my router and one on my primary mesh wifi AP. This worked well for me because each of the three devices were in separate locations, so buying a more cost effective traditional UPS didn't work for me.

Battery life is excellent, keeping us online during a power cut in of excess of 5 hours!
