I was downloading music videos from youtube, using 4kVideoDownload, but that has stopped now, firstly because 4kVideo versions since 4.19.3 insist on at least Win 10 or later, therefore I've been stuck on 4.19.3 since it came out. 4.19.3 still worked and I still used it.

Then youtube seems to have done something which allows me to watch and hear the video, but 4kVideo cannot Parse the video, even though I can copy the 'traditional' ID of the video, and paste it into 4kVideo. Quite what 4kVideo can download now, I dont know. 4kVideo dont seem to be sympathetic because I am using Win 7, so my question is "does anyone know what I can either do to get 4kVideo to work, or do you know something that I could use instead of 4kVideo?"

Do I have to pay youtube now (or even 4kVideo), or will not even paying for it solve the problem? I dont download much these days. I got most of what I wanted back in the pre 4.19.3 days

My thanks for any help

Are you using Firefox ?

If so there is a Add-on called Private Video Downloader... that MAY work... not tried it...

Also, does your 4KVideo downloader need permission ( on firefox ) for working in "private windows".

How strange! I've had the people at 4kVideo involved in this problem (or variants of it) since 4.19.3 was replaced. In the end they gave up, and I can only assume the thing about Win 7 may just be an excuse because they cannot figure it out.

I'm beginning to think that, as you can use a later version of 4kVideo with Win 7 without problem, that there is something on my pc that is blocking things. How on earth do I solve that? I do seem to have problems with other things. For example, opening this reply took a long time before I could start typing. I have other things that seem to be slower than they used to be. Opening Chrome can occasionally take a long time (not every time). Do you remember that scandal when a phone maker deliberately slowed down their old phones? Is this something similar?

I run Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentila, and Spybot SD to prevent nasties getting on my pc, so what should I try next

I've just tried your first suggestion, but when I selected Microsoft Store (your instruction no. 3) it didn't respond in time. This is a problem I have had of and on for a while now, where trying to get something over the web has timed out. It doesn't happen all the time, and tends to be in those things I dont access all that often, if more than once.

Therefore, it seems to me that there is a problem between my pc and the outside world. It could be in my pc, in my modem, in the telephone system, who knows. Should I ask Plusnet to test my line? How close can they get to my pc?

@penneck OK... so, route 1 failed. did you try route 2... direct download from that site ? ( make sure you get the right version...i.e 32bit or 64bit for your win7 version.

You can ask PN to check your line.... not sure how far it get "in" to your computer... probably from their gear up to you exchange, or maybe the nearest green box to you.

Presumably you have a filter in line from your router to the "Master Socket". and you are directly connected from your computer/laptop to the router via a cable?

You can also check it your self with Routerstats Lite http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/betatesters.htm

download here.... https://routerstats-lite.software.informer.com/6.8/

and a few speed tests results from OOKLA speed test. to check the actual speed of the connection.

Bearing in mind your warning about getting the right version, I went to that htpps address you included and found "Mozilla Firefox For Win 7", but there are several versions, the latest being 117. There isn't, at that point, any indication that V117 will be the latest that will work with Win 7, because the description also appears to talk about Win 10. Nor is there any guidance whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, so I have erred on the side of caution and stopped.

As for the checking the line, I haven't started that yet, but will try your Routerstats process in a few minutes

Have you ever used it. In the list of Netgear routers, it included the DG834(G), which is what my present (yet now old) Netgear router replaced many years ago, but doesn't include my present Netgear DGN2200 router. The nearest it gets is DGN1000. Also, if I try using the DGN1000 instead, it asks for the security details of the router, which I am loath to provide, just in case.

Am I being too cautious?

Bearing in mind your warning about getting the right version, I went to that htpps address you included and found "Mozilla Firefox For Win 7", but there are several versions, the latest being 117. There isn't, at that point, any indication that V117 will be the latest that will work with Win 7, because the description also appears to talk about Win 10. Nor is there any guidance whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, so I have erred on the side of caution and stopped.

As for the checking the line, I haven't started that yet, but will try your Routerstats process in a few minutes

@penneck See if you can find a copy of FF115 - that is the last supported on W7. I think there should be an option to select 32/64bit at some stage, but I can't confirm - I don't use Windows .

OK. Firefox first.

On that link , Look to the right of "Free open-source browser" and you will see App Specs

drop your view down a bit,..... to a little box marked Version, and it shows 117.0 says it is for Windows 11..

BUT.... if you click the "down arrow" in that box, you get a long list of previous versions going some way back.

@jab1 suggests that 115 was the last version for windows 7.... I thought it was earlier, but worth a try,... if it downloads and installs, GREAT... if not try a couple of earlier versions, until you get one that does install.

As for Routerstats.

it is asking for your router login, because it needs to "connect" to the router while it is connect to PN ADSL . otherwise it cannot do it`s stuff... perfectly safe, its only "listening" and then analysing, and producing the charts. ( PN equipment also accesses your line to do the same ! )

Been using it for years, and it has not done me any harm... ( ask the missus ! ! ! ! ) .

@shutter - just FYI, I checked the Firefox support FAQs before posting that. 115 is the one which will get ESR.

I have just checked a couple of YouTube 4K videos using JDownloader2 and that works just fine. It tends to offer an Audio-only option as well as lower resolutions. You can remove the ones you don't want and just download what you do.

I don't see why it wouldn't work in W7 as it did for me before I switched to W10.

My thanks to all of you. You have certainly put in some effort. I can at last report success. Mav's suggestion of using JDownloader2 has enabled me to download a video. It downloaded 4 files, and I needed to delete 3 of them but I kept the video. It didn't download to where I would prefer (although it did put them where I agreed to have them but I wasn't in the mood to argue), so I just need to tweak it a bit. Hopefully, this will continue to work, and I can abandon 4kVideo (sorry 4k, you worked well for a long time).

Well, regards and thanks to you all
