I've used something like this with success.
I didn't use it with the Canon but see no reason why it wouldn't work.

As title suggests I would like if poss to use this printer wirelessly or if need be wired over my network. Its currently in my loft room with my scanner, and as I am mothballing the desktop need to relocate to downstairs. It only has usb a ports. I dont want to get rid, as its a good printer and does exactly as I want it too. I realise that I am likely to need a print server and unfortunately both my routers dont have usb ports. The tg582n and that sagem thing.
Anyone done this and what have you used.

I use a raspberry pi for a print server £16 I think these days for the old one. It allows me to keep up to date with the latest security etc.
Let me know if you need any more info.

It has USB & ethernet ports, so you just load a specialised Linux on the Pi.
You will be able to use the scanner too.

Cheers Foxy,
I used the usb port on the RPi with Raspbian for connection much the same as the print server above would then plug that into the router over ethernet with WiFi enabled, I'm pretty sure I used this tutorial to get myself setup with it all. Just shout if you need any further help should you decide to go down this route.
Not sure if this is relevant as I have the Canon IP4500 but faced with a similar situation I plugged a bluetooth dongle into the printer and that worked ok with a laptop using windows 7.
