I am in the early stages of designing a server based on an Intel S5000PSL motherboard. The problem is, the tech spec talks about a 5-pin power signal connector which carries the following signals:-
SMB_CLK_ESB_FP_PWR_R
SMB_DAT_ESB_FP_PWR_R
SMB_ALRT_3_ESB_R
3.3V SENSE-
3.3V SENSE+
I've never come across this before, and have no idea what I do with it. In the tech spec, it is in the Power Connectors section. Does it connect to the power supply? If not, where does it connect to? What sort of power supply unit should I use with this board.
If any one can enlighten me please, I would be grateful

Thanks in advance

its the pin layout from the ATX power supply
its the auxiliary power supply signal connector and it fits into a connector on the motherboard next to the power cable
if your using an intel motherboard you may or will need the intel power supply(normally part of the intel server case ) for it
as the power supply cable connectors are different from the ATX

I have had experience of ATX power supplies with Intel server motherboards., The psu's I had used didn't have a 5-pin connector on any of the leads, nor did any of the Intel boards have a 5-pin connector.
The Intel tech spec on the motherboard gives no detail of which type of power supply unit is required, nor does the web seem to give any details in any of the variants of the ATX psu spec, of a feedback circuit from the motherboard to the psu. Certainly, I haven't found any ATX psu's or specs that have a 5-pin connector on them. Hence my difficulty finding a suitable psu (and this is before I consider what power the psu needs to supply).

Thanks for your help. I didn't particularly want to have to buy an Intel server chassis. I was hoping to build the server in my own chassis (it has to have requirements that a bought-in server case wont supply), hence needing to find a suitable psu. Buying an intel chassis just to get a power supply seems an expensive way to go but if I have to then I have to.
It has taken me 5 days of searching and I did not get as far as you got in 24 hours. I suppose that is the result of you having better experience and knowing where to look. Do you know - is this Intel PSU a standard "type" of psu (such as ATX) or is this type of psu special to Intel?

Pros:

Cons: This MB requires a power supply that has an Auxiliary power plug. This 5 pin connector is only on Intel power supplies. You probably have to have the Intel case as well because Intel does not supply the pin out for control panel.
