Can you be specific? Which provider and what speed difference?

With the exception of 1.6Gbps in some geographies, Plusnet can supply the same as any other ISP using the SAME BT infrastructure.

If you are talking about services delivered over some other altnet, you are comparing Apples and Pears. For example, in some locations Zen supplies over City Fibre which IIRC is a symetrical service; therefore within Zen you'll see differing speed offers depending on where you live.

It is not a matter of "PN letting themselves fall behind" but rather a matter of what services are provided by BT Wholesale / Openreach in a specific geography.

I'm out of contract soon and Plusnet don't seem that competitive either in terms of speed or with respect to the router.

I want WiFi6, 6E or 7, Hub2 is very old is there any chance of something better than Hub2?

If you move ISP you lose your landline, PN email and any other add ons you may have.

PN have always been happy for customers to use their own equipment to suit their needs, If you want WiFi6 have a look on eBay or CEX for a Fritz?Box 7530AX router. This should suit your needs.

This is the router Zen Internet use so if moving check their offering out. usually not the cheapest but they have a good reputation, supply a well regarded router and have no mid contract price rises. If your landline matters to you they do VOIP as well.

I don't have a landlines or use PN email.

PN have let themselves fall behind, I was checking the offers and for similar money I can get faster Internet and a modern router.

If Zen were in my area I'd be willing to pay a little more, as you said they have a good rep and have been around for a very long time.

Both Zen and PN use OR so you should be able to get the former. Stick your post code in the Zen site to see what's offered.

Actually it "better" than that:

My understanding is that CityFibre only provision one of two network products, 100/100Mbps and 900/900Mbps. So, if a customer requests a 100Mbps connection then they get the 100 product. If the customer orders anything higher than 100 then they get the 900Mbps network connection and it is up to the ISP how they restrict it.

I am on a 300Mbps symmetrical product with Zen via CityFibre. Zen cap the download, but not the upload.

I've just done a speed test and get a touch over 300 down and 930 up.

Whether that extra upload speed is of any benefit to me though, is another matter! 😀

@Anonymous But in an Openreach only area the offer 100, 500, 900 or 1.6Gb, withe corresponding 20, 70, 110 and 110 upload as per Openreach’s current asymmetric network. Unless you happen to be on the new symmetrical network.
