"How faced with this topic and that are they supposed to please everyone?"

OK Townman, since you like to oversimplify things, I will give a very simple solution to this issue.

1 - Plusnet can check if someone has ticked the marketing/sales contacts as per their account preferences.

2 - If these indicate someone has said not to contact - then don't contact them. If they then later complain about not being told about offers/contract ending etc, Plusnet can then refer them to this choice and advise them to change this.

3 - If someone has indicated acceptance of marketing/sales contact, then you can try to contact them in the way allowed.

Any call should be a simple courtesy one to advise the customer of potential offers and to suggest they call the customer options number to discuss options if this is of interest to them.

This would not fall foul of data protection and would be safest for the customer as it would not give away any more information than existing calls that have asked for the person by name and advised them that the call was from Plusnet.

This method would totally avoid any potential security issues while giving the customer the same amount of information and choice as the current unsafe method.

Is that simple enough?

This might appear obvious but there is an issue here which has made this malfunction. This is either Plusnet has relabelled "Cold Marketing/Sales Calls" as "Service" calls so marketing/sales preferences were being ignored (indicated in answer to a formal complaint) or that the preference database has malfunctioned, so even those who have said no contact are getting cold calls (As indicated by the staff answering on this forum).

I don't know which is the issue but both of these can be easily dealt with.

Either stop the relabelling process and stop all cold style "service" calls (That solely discuss new offers or re-contracting matters) to everyone who has indicated no sales/marketing contact if this is the issue.

If the preference database is not functioning correctly, admit this and stop all cold calls until it has been corrected.

This would stop most of the different issues raised by most on this thread in one go. It would also solve the much more minor issue of those who do not seem able to use a calendar in the other threads you mention.

While I might not agree with these other people and believe that some expect far too much from their service providers, I do respect that these people have the right to bring their concerns to the forum.

Plusnet have a wide variety of different people using their services, from the technically advanced to the amateur, from the able to the vulnerable and from the very intelligent to those less bright individuals.

All should be treated with equal amount of consideration and respect, even if their concerns do not match those of others.

I believe MauriceC hit the nail on the head in his last post (Number 84) and hopefully he can get some results in this superuser forum that was mentioned.

EDIT - In case anyone is interested - I have made my opinion upon the expectation of Plusnet to advise upon offers and my own expectation when someone has indicated they want no marketing contact in the thread Townman referred to in his recent posts here -

I have received two calls from 0114 307 3836 on my PlusNet supplied land line [last Thursday pm and Saturday pm] as I was not in the calls were not answered no message was left. I called the number from my mobile and received a message that a marketing company had phoned on behalf of PlusNet I rand off. A short while later a call came to my mobile it was blocked by an app [Mr Number] as a telemarketing spammer this call was from 0114 307 3836.all my phones are registered with the DMA on the TPS list. Are these calls from PLUSNET or a company working for them and if so why are they phoning numbers on the TPS list? If PlusNet have any thing they wish to ask then why not send an email and ask if it will be OK for someone to phone and when would it be the best time. Just phoning and not leaving a message is bad business practice and only likely to [-Censored-] customers off. both my mobile and land lines now block this number.

Unfortunately TPS registration only stops UK companies which you do not have a relationship with from contacting you. So as Plusnet is your provider, and you have not altered your marketing preferences in the member centre then Plusnet can call you.

That may be the case but getting someone else to ring and not leaving messages can only be considered to be bad and not in the spirit of the rules. Just as a matter of interest why is the default set to "can call" without asking for this to be setup when a customer first moves the phone to PlusNet. If you are anything like BT it will make no difference it was just ignored.

And now you have a valid complaint. Wilful disregard for your wishes.

(I had assumed that the settings would be in Plusnet's favour as most companies use the "you must stop us" option not the better "we must ask")

I just received a call from someone using this number. He said he was from Plusnet mobile, and as I had not long registered for this service - the guy sounded genuine. He asked for security details and what service I wanted and then asked my for the same security details again? It was then that I begun to get suspicious. He then asked for my bank details, after which I hung up!

My first thought was that this was a scam, and now I see this thread about them using another company that operate in an unprofessional manner. I'm very disappointed with Plusnet!

TPS registration does not apply to market research companies. Could PN be using such a company to find out what you/we think of their service (in a slightly more scientific way than just reading this forum )?

If silent calls and asking security information is a way that PN operates they are worse than I thought and that was bad.

Most REPUTABLE companies will not cold call you and ask you to go through security. It invites fraud, it invites the scammers and creates an open door for PN's customers to give away vital security information top rogues and thieves.

They called me a couple of times today. Answered it this afternoon and they claimed to be from Plusnet. Asked if I had pre-registered for PNet mobile recently and that they were calling to get me signed up. I said I didn't understand why they were calling. Chap asked if I had already received the SIM. I said that I had (weeks ago) and I asked which company he was calling from. He said 'Plusnet'. I said 'who are you really?' He said, 'Plusnet'. He went on to say that the system might not have caught up with the fact that I already had an account. I said 'I don't believe you, goodbye' and hung up the phone.

Is this REALLY Plusnet calling? If so, why don't they know that I have had a mobile SIM for 4 weeks already?

If they really are Pnet, then it's coming to something where you suspect a company you do business with of being telephone scammers.

What's a chap to do???

When I started this post I thought it would result in a response from PlusNet either saying it was nothing to do with them or at least explaining why they were ignoring the no contact request and the do not pass my details to others. I know the market research is different to marketing but it is a thin line and PlusNet seem to have crossed it.

There is no denial, no advice about how to deal with the scammers, so I stand firmly believing that it is Pnet, the fact that they do not seem to know what they are doing just adds weight as far as I am concerned.

Missed two calls from them today... One of them a few minutes ago!

I registered my interest in plusnet mobile but got a matching retention offer from 3, so didn't bother going with them. I assume it's relating to that.
Calls at 8 at night is kind of taking the Mick!

Try contacting them with online chat and tell them what you really think.

They are obviously REFUSING to talk to anyone about this or they would post on here.

Just don't care what they put their customers through.

At last Pnet admit that they are making these marketing calls which ask for customers to give security details. We are warned against such and Pnet authorise their staff to do it. You could not make it up.
