Sadly that is because most of their calls are indeed from numpties/customers who themselves cannot or don't read manuals etc.
I was once told by a mobile phone executive at a business conference that 80% of their calls were what he termed "customer education and re-assurance " and I termed RTFM type calls.
At that sort of ratio can you honestly expect companies to do anything else than create overseas call centres to answer the rubbish as cheaply as possible.
It also means, as you say, that those who 'know a bit' get driven insane trying to get though to someone who understands and can deal with the problem - however the problem is simply that you are a minority so they don't care.
Unless of course the "customer" is themselves a business which umpteen thousand accounts whose designated contact will have direct lines to call direct to a dedicated problem solver in their tech dept.
I know this has been moved to Feedback for Comment by PlusNet.....
but this must be the understatement of the year....

Quote

we have become aware that some limited non-sensitive information may have been illegally accessed in violation of our security procedure,"

Surely, ANY information stored about customers is "sensitive"... how can they justify that statement... ? probably, trying to "save face" ( as in chinese/japanese culture) or trying to "play down" the severity of their lapse of security on this "non" sensitive information...
They also state ......... this information MAY have been illegally accessed.... HUH ? There has been a breach of security.... but they are saying "may" have been illegallly accessed...
Really ? ? ?

you can`t believe this company after a statement like that.....

The statement that always amazes me is being conned into giving away bank details. There is no way I would reveal any bank details via phone, email or the net. If they don't know them then they aren't legit.

I'm not sure what answer you're expecting really! We're certainly not going to detail our security policies publicly. I'm also not sure why a new article about a different company relates to Plusnet.

I can only guess but TT have recently taken over BB from other companies plus TT are linked to Carphone Warehouse so there's a lot of possibilities. PN are in a totally different position with only BT as a parent.
I would suspect some form of 'error' (polite word) during one of the migrations.
