One you're pretty much alone in thinking is a good idea (at least on here). Especially making it opt out rather than opt in by default.

As has been said to you by many others, many times before, if you want a provider which has some sort of automatic parental controls, switch to a provider who supplies them.
PlusNet is not falling behind, Plusnet is catering to it's market.
This is not a legal requirement, this is not a social requirement and it is not a moral requirement. If you don't want your kids to see things on the internet, then supervise their use of it or go to a provider who will take the responsibility from you.

No one wants censorship by default. Those sort of implementations are used to censor things other than porn and is abused, the government won't tell you that, they just want you to know that they can parent your children for you and make everything sound all nice and flowers while they start quietly slipping websites and IP's into that filtering system that they don't want you to see.
Among this censor I think David Cameron said not too long ago that he doesn't want internet encryption to be a thing because the government can't see what you're doing, it's ludicrous.

On a serious note I believe the filter will give parent's a false sense of security. They'll think little Johny or Janet is safe from the world's nasties when, in reality, they've circumvented the filters because they're keen to know what's being filtered!
Parents need to be responsible for what their own children do or see online.
I can also imagine those who have opted out coming under scrutiny when some mucky sod in a raincoat exposes himself in the park.

The fact that PlusNet don’t offer a filter is a plus point for me. The fact that using a simple VPN application circumvents a filter means that they are pretty ineffective anyway.

My point is that their content blocking / censorship will not and cannot be 100% accurate, innocent content will be blocked, 'undesirable' content will be accessible.
I would never want to rely on any faulty safety device.

My take on this apart from disagreeing with what government seek to impose on us because they are control freaks , Is this ISP's could have this filtering,but it would be only for those that wanted it, and those who wanted it would have to pay extra each month for it , Bearing in mind such an unpopular extra service would cost quite a bit more than your monthly bb subs do ,

I don't think censorship should be enabled by default. The account holder should be able to choose whether they want to switch it on or not. I'm glad PlusNet hasn't gone this way.

Please don't bother, Plusnet, this filter idea is another politicians' plaster which won't work. Older folk know that when they have a computer problem they just summon their 12-year-old grandchild. It's a bit like the childproof caps on our arthritis pills ... when gnarled fingers can't open those awkward caps or those accursed plastic bubblepacks, just call on the nearest child

When will you learn that, despite the hype these filters simply do not work, the majority of users do not want them and managing what your children do is your responsibility not someone else's?
Filters can at best only block content which the publisher has already marked as having pornographic, violent or other undesirable content. That being the case you can set the browser filters on your child's PC which if done properly is more likely to be effective against Defeating ISP provided filters.
Orange implements "child safe" browsing by default on their smart phones. I found that access to "what your MP does" and PlusNET forum websites (amongst many) was blocked.
This stuff simply does not work as porported, will not actually deliver the safety you are hoping for; it is window dressing. Looking after your kids is your responsibility, so please don't bother rattling this cage again - you are not getting any support for the idea.
I suspect that if PlusNET were to implement parental controls, you will be at the front of the queue to whine that you (or your unsupervised kids) were able to defeat the filters.

So plusnet safe guard then. Wasn't so hard now was it.
It took them a long time (nothing new there I suppose) but we finally have what I would call a family filter,
So good all-round I think. If you don't have kids and want to crack one off to Debbie Does Dallas, so be it. If you have children growing up around you and you wish to be able to have some control, so be it.
I've no doubt that I will be slated again by the few, but there you go.
As for them that claim this is a bad move by plus net nothing changes, they are still welcome to watch, download of stream whatever takes their fancy. As for me and I suspect many others, we will have a little more peace of mind than what we had before.
For probably the only that you will hear me say this "Well done Plusnet"
