Happy New Year email from PN today asking "Why not kick off the New Year safely and securely with 3 months free Plusnet Protect,* our Internet security package powered by McAfee then just £2 a month after."
Well the simple answer is, I am not the type of person who blindly opens e-mail attachments, clicks spam ads for cheap Viagra, and follows links from pop-up windows, all while using an outdated browser, therefore Microsoft Security Essentials offers a good enough level of protection to suits my needs free of charge, It runs quietly in the background, stays up to date automatically, and can be scheduled to run at any time or interval.
I'd much prefer emails from PN saying, Happy New Year, have a month free on us for being such a loyal customer, don't you agree?

I also agree with everything you've said. Commonsense + MSE is sufficient for normal use.
There is also a plethora of excellent free anti-malware programs available in addition to MSE if anyone feels the need for extra protection.
IMHO McAfee and Norton are just for the gullible ( or total dummies)

Does this mean I would get OVER the maximum of 2mbps my line supports?
Somehow I doubt it.
Is it such a difficult task for Nick Rawlings Commercial & Marketing Director, Plusnet to identify the customers to which offers such as this would not apply and filter his marketing mails?

It certainly won't increase your maximum line speed. It just ensures that all your traffic is prioritised rather than being managed or slowed down:

If, like me, you don't do gaming, P2P etc then it's not worth the money. But I can see that it could well be for some people.
I doubt that PN could easily target this at just that audience!

Another one today >:(, Unsolicited emails from Plusnet with various offers are starting to get on my nerves so sorry guys, autoemail@plus.net is now on my very aggressive spam filter, I'll take the chance of missing something important.

Am I wrong in thinking you SHOULDN'T report PlusNet emails as Spam because they're actually genuine marketing emails that you signed up for as part of the terms and conditions of joining the service?

Personally I like to be in control of what I pay for and content I receive. I no longer receive junk mail, canvassing telephone calls or cold callers at the door so why not control what reaches my computer.
When I first took on my rolling 1 month contract with PN, I did so via telephone where I stipulated that my details are not to be passed to a third party, and I did not wish to receive marketing emails. If that was not acceptable, no worries, plenty of other service providers willing to take my money and adhere to my request.
As my terms were agreed to by the sales person, it is safe to assume that I did not sign up for them.
By marking as spam, I am actually telling my email server to either place unwanted emails addressed to ME in a spam folder where I can choose to view before deleting, or, delete at the server without saving,

Ignoring your preferences is serious and you should complain about it, not have to take your own steps to deal with it.
I think it's OK to treat marketing emails as spam if you can't stop them coming after unsubscribing. What I don't like is emails being treated as spam INSTEAD of being unsubscribed from -- this just accepts that the email system is awash with a sea of junk without even trying to reduce it.

1. I suggest you are obliged to report the issue to PlusNet BEFORE reporting them as Spam - especially in the apparent absence of any written confirmation of your discussions

You can suggest all you like drj but the saying "Horse...stable Door....bolted" comes to mind! if they don't like it they have two choices,
I'm sure they will make contact if they wish to challenge my action.

Depending on the mail system used, I can either mark as spam or report spam...the first gives the option to unmark as spam therefore is at user level not global..

1. You should always confirm a verbal contract in writing - it's just one person's word against another otherwise.
2. I was referring to webmail - I use the Spam reporting facility at RoundCube to report Spam before I download it.

Not had a letter from PN in all the years I have been with them, (had a few refunds and credits though especially when the South African call certre bunch screwed up)
