Will it get better?

After an absolutely disasterous period signing up with PN (No Internet for 19 days - AND over the Christmas period), my connection is now live, but I now find my broadband speed is far less than that promised (4Mb).
Before you say anything, Yes, I understand what the "Up To xxMb" means, but the service I am getting is only just marginally faster than TalkTalk.
Will this speed ever improve? Or should I now start regreting ever leaving TalkTalk?

Many thing affect your speeds so...
What are your line stats from your router (also state what router you are using)
What does a bt speedtest give you (speedtester.bt.com) - this will also state your IP profile
What does it say under high speed broadband on your member centre under connection settings. This will show what IP profile Plusnet are using which should match the BT one. If its lower that will explain the speed resuvction which should correct itself within a day or so.
If this is a new connection you will be in the 10 day testing period... An occasional reboot may help but not too frequently as it could affect your overall speeds.

to get your router stats see http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php
No more than one reboot a day, and it should be in the period of half hour after Sunrise and before 2 PM to get your best speed

BT Speedtest reports 2.93Mb, but nothing about my IP Profile (mind you it is the Beta version of the Speedtest).

I can't find anything that gives the IP Profile in that area.

Indeed, the service has only been active for the past 18 hours.
Perhaps I am worrying too soon?

Hi gstrickland,
I've just nudged your profile up to 3000, but in order to get better you will have to increase your sync rate. Can you use a new filter and plug into the test socket? Let me know if you do that and I'll take another look.

At that downstream attenuation value, this is the kind of speed you should expect.
If the line really has just been enabled for a few hours, then you can expect is to drop a little as the target SNR is unlikely to stay at 6dB which it is now. Be happy if you end up on a 9dB setting and stay at about 2.8Mb/s
Do you have any speedtest.net results to share from when you were on TalkTalk?

The DSL type reported in the stats (992.3) is, I think, ADSL2 rather than ADSL2+ (992.5). However, given that you're on a longish line, that might be OK as you're unlikely to get a decent signal through the additional higher frequencies of the '+' setting. Can someone more knowledgeable than me confirm that?

thats correct 992.3 is 21CN ADSL2
in general if the synch is below 4000 its not worth trying ADSL2, Jo Jo can he go onto ADSL (992.1) as a trial, it might give them a higher speed

Hi guys i have ended up here searching for some answers.
I signed up with plus net after moving home recently, when i carried out the "estimated line speed test" prior to signing up i was estimated to get a 7mb +/- 1mb connection which sounded great, if not a bit generous considering i was moving away from the exchange and my previous ISP managed 5mb (demon). Any way after being with plus net for almost 2 months my connection speed is currently 0.25mb! here is a copy and paste from the high speed internet page...

7Mb (Accurate to within +/- 1Mbit) - Checked on 2011-11-25 13:10:04
Current line speed:
0.25 Mb
I have raised a ticket and had a BT engineer out to see if there were any problems. He told me that i would never in a million years get 7mb (which i knew from the off) but said i should get a stable 1mb connection at the time my line speed was averaging 0.4mb and he told me that the line was running at only 50% of its capacity? Since his visit about a month ago my speed has decreased to the current 0.25mb. I have attached a speedtest.net url that i carried out today.
So my question is... Does it really get better? Or should i consider getting one of those mobile broadband dongles and just give up with wired broadband.

Well, we're not getting the estimated speed either - no surprise there then. The speed since signing up has dropped off a little.......

... but the service has remained fairly stable.
The only thing I can add at the moment is that the service is noticeably slower during the evenings.

That estimated speed result seems suspicious given the circumstances you describe. Had your phone number recently been assigned to a different line?
What estimate is given now if you put your number into the BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker?
Posting your router stats - from here if you are using a Thomson router, or see Kitz frogstats - would help Community members give more informed comment.

Thanks for posting that sprayxt. I just did the BT Wholesale broadband checker and it tells me:
"Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 3.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 2Mbps and 6Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 5.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 4.5Mbps and 9Mbps."
So my quesion is, why am I not getting an ADSL2+ connection from Plusnet?
