Since the vast majority on plussers on 8mb dont get anywhere near that speed i fail to see why plusnet are marketing a 20mb speed. If you live right opposite an exchange you will be very very lucky to get anywhere near 11mb.
But that is not my main argument. I have consistently argued that speed is largely irrelevant as the vast majority of d/l sites have their own d/l speeds and restrictions. Add to that plus nets traffic management throttling problems,
Even if plus net provide you with a 100mb d/l speed your iplayer will still stammer at peak times and the majority of d/l sites will simply laugh at you.
I am of the opinion that what plus value customers want more than anything is an increase in the monthly usage allowance.
10gb or 300mb a day just gives you 3 video d/ls a few browsing sitesand a few emails.and i small iplayer playback

I think value gives good value for money, If you want more GB without Traffic Shaping and with Full line speed at all times I suggest people start moving to Plusnet Pro, With 20gb and full line speed at all times.

steve txs for reply but.........20mb will only double what i said earlier and full line speed will still relult in the vast majority of d/l sites. d/l videos at 92.kps. translated that means it will take nearly 45 mins to d/l a 320mb video

Dont you mean that Upto 20mb d/l speeds would eat 10GB usage rather fast on the value product? People lucky enough to live IN their exchange generally get good down speeds.

I think Value is excellent for the money - I'm fortunate enough to be on a Market 3 exchange so still paying £5.99/month.
We'd all love a higher monthly allowance but we do have the choice of moving to Extra with 60Gb allowance.

If the total usage per month doesn't change then increasing the speed wouldn't increase the cost over a month
If the browsing habits don't change all that would happen is that things would happen quicker and the connection would spend longer sitting idle

If I increase (double) my speed, then I can download 1 film in half the time. I then have to watch it.
I have only a finite amount of time available, so will likely be doing something else (sleeping maybe) whilst downloading. I'm not going to all of a sudden think
"oh good my download speed has doubled I can watch twice as many films now"
I'm just going to re-prioritise so that I can do things in a much more efficient manner.
I personally never understand the fuss about usage allowances though - it only applies between 8am and midnight, so if you really want to download stuff, schedule it for the early hours of the morning when it will be faster due to less network congestion.

Wrong
If you are using your computer to visit say 1000 web sites in a day before the speed increase reducing the loading time for each site by half doesn't mean that you would want to or be able to visit 2000 web sites a day, unless you weren't bothering to read what was on the site, which would be needed to double the usage
Just to add I noticed you posted again while I was typing - you could have used the modify function to change the previous post instead of bumping the thread - the costs to Plusnet are per GB used not speed. It doesn't matter if you use it in 1 minute or 10 minutes it still costs the same

so ATM extra usage cost plusnet extra money
but extra increases in speed do not
why not?
My guess is that BT and plusnet want more customers moved over onto 21cn (while its still in its trials )
and hotting up the engine on a car to travel on 10GB track
is not as beneficial as providing more road for your existing car to drive on

Quote from: Oldjim

the costs to Plusnet are per GB used not speed.

Well… not quite. The ultimate cost to Plusnet is capacity, which is a kind of amalgamation of both of those. So, for example, 10,000 Value customers on 20Mbps is likely to cost Plusnet more than 10,000 Value customers on 8Mbps because the likelihood is that, at busy times, they would altogether be using more of Plusnet's available capacity, even accounting for the strict rate limiting. It is therefore certainly possible that more usage could have been included with Value rather than increasing its speed, but I couldn't begin to guess how much extra could be included as it would depend on so many things (number of Value customers, number of other customers, usage patterns of all those customers, and probably many more things besides, which only Plusnet are only privy to).
