What a complete waste of time this has turned out to be. OK so I got a better connection speed but the wireless on it is useless. 20% standing right next to it... walk out the room and it's gone. Back onto the 3Com for now. Looks like the DLink will be going on Ebay.

seems a perfectly good wireless router to me, that Dlink - I'm getting 80 to 85 % signal strength (connection speed 24mb/s from router to pc), through a brick wall with a DECT phone hub right beside the router

It's mine as long as I stay in my contract for 12 months or pay the full price of it if I leave.
It may be a good router but this one certainly has a problem if that's the case. The signal was so bad my phone, netbook, laptop couldn't connect unless in the same room yet my 5+ year old 3com gets me a signal upstairs and like barky it's also sat next to a DECT phone.

I was sent DLink DSL-2640B when I joined 4 months ago. So far has comfortably outperformed Orange "Livebox" ,Buffalo and Belkin routers I had before.Getting good or excellent signals throughout the house,in the garage and in the garden with WPA-PSK encryption enabled .Have used 4 different PCI or USB cards. Suggest you may have faulty routers?

Hi yep.. I originally set it up to use the same channel that my old router uses without any problems. I've tried it with both settings and even standing next to it you only get about a 25% signal strength. I've raised a ticket now so hopefully I'll get sent a replacement.

Hi
I also received one of these yesterday, having agreed to stay for another year (not a difficult choice). I also found the Plusnet instructions fairly easy to follow, but initially had a couple of problems, which seem to have sorted themselves out. As far as I can tell, my sync speed seems higher than with my old Belkin :). I'm not convinced about the signal strength, but it doesn't seem very different according to the bars on the connection status.
So far so good
John

A major improvement you can make to wireless is to change the channel from the default (often 6).
To channel 1, 6 or 11 (don't use any other).
I don't know if there is anything for Windows but for Linux enter the command

iwlist scan
It will show the channel used and the signal strength for all nearby access points (and other information).
Got the replacement today & it is now set up and working a treat. Wireless signal is pretty decent around the house and I'm getting far higher connection speeds. I know it'll take a day or two to see the full benefit of sync'ing at over a Mbit higher (around 7.5Mbit) but even rendering pages is a lot faster.
Once again thanks to the Plusnet team for getting this sorted and the faulty router will be dispatched back to you asap.
