Migration help

Have to say not happy at this but what can you do.

Anyway, being dumped onto ee for phone and internet.

I've got fibre to the cabinet, not house.

Do I need to do anything re the internet or will the ee router be fine with FTTC

How do I get the phone adapter thing?

What happens if our phone doesn't like the adapter? What are the chances?

Also, my parents are in the same boat.
But my dad has a medical bracelet needing the traditional landline. He's not the bill payer and my mum isn't great with sort of thing. Can I phone PN to warn them and what then happens thats different?

@my53rdchoice For your situation: You will receive a new EE router, which is fine for FTTC, into which your phone will plug. What adapter are you talking about - AFAIK, the EE router doesn't need one.

Your parents: Are PN aware of the medical device? The suppliers of the bracelet should have by now provided one suitable for the new system, or advised other options. Are you a registered contact on their account?

I believe there have been past posts on here saying that the phone port on the EE supplied hub doesnt always play nicely and eventually EE support if they cant resolve it, concede and send an adaptor to plug the phone into.

@njay Correct, but that is not always the case, although we won't know the numbers, as those having the issue will normally be talking to EE support, which the OP will have to do if they encounter issues.

The adapter is because the phone isn't near the router, its a different room. They mention an adapter which uses power lines.

I'm not listed as a contact. I don't know if they got a new device, I'll ask at the weekend

Adapter - check the EE website, or call their support.

Get your parents to add you as an approved contact on their account

By medical bracelet, is this a telecare device that rings a designated number and relies on the landline?

If so, mention that in the notes box of the form as I don’t think the standard EE digital voice service works with telecare, but there will be other options to explore.

Did we ever get to the bottom of whether, if someone is on FTTC but in a FTTP stop-sell area, will they be forced to move to FTTP by Openreach when the EE transfer goes through?

@mike600 I'm currently on FTTC. When I received a phone call from Plusnet, I asked about whether I would be forced onto FTTP when I'm transferred to EE, as I'm on a FTTP priority exchange. She said I would be. I don't know whether the same would apply to those who are not on a priority exchange.

When you join EE as a new customer, they allow you 1 adapter for free. I don't know what the procedure will be for those of us being transferred from Plusnet though.

Although the adaptors plug into a mains socket, they don't use powerline technology. They use a wireless connection to the router on 1881.792–1897.344MHz.

I've also just been forcibly removed from Plusnet to EE. Most things worked, slightly to my surprise, and they sent me two phone adaptors as we have two extension phones. One thing that didn't work is an old laptop running Windows 10 which simply cannot see the wifi signal from their new router. I think it works with Wifi-6 whatever that is and the old laptop only supports an older standard. I still haven't got this resolved, and have seen many posts on EE forum reporting very similar problems.

@clive_p I'm open to being told I'm wrong, but I don't think the laptop issue is related to the router, as I understand it should be backward compatible with earlier Wi-Fi standards.

I believe there was a recent thread about EE switch-over where a user was reporting one device wouldn't connect to EE hub. I think someone eventually posted saying even 2.4ghz compatible wifi option on EE hub doesnt work as it still uses wifi 6.

I assume this is wpa3 and that the hub will not step down to earlier wpa2? It could well be something else within wifi 6 standard though.

I recall that post, @njay , but WiFi6 and the 2.4Ghz radio band are not related. I have an old (14+ years) laptop, which is only WiFi4/2.4Ghz capable, and it perfectly happy working with my Fritz!Box 7530, which is WiFi5 and dual 2.4/5Ghz. A W10 machine should be compatible with the EE hub the age difference is not so great.

The fritzbox is more accommodating

It believe it has "WPA2 + WPA3" transition mode or a standalone "WPA2" encryption as options

Recent EE hub fw has aligned it with their superhub and by default only supports wpa3 connections. The fw has removed wpa2/wp3 transition option.

To allow wpa2 devices to connect to router you apparantly have to enable compatible wifi setting. This is a 3rd wifi running over 2.4Ghz only but seperate to the default 2.4g and 5g wifi networks that only allow wpa3.

However, the comment in other thread was that compatible wifi still doesnt work in all cases due to something to do with wifi 6 but i dont know what that could be.

I do recall though a wireless N router where you could disable b/g devices connecting so whilst that was optional it does show that routers can exclude devices based on their wifi standard

I can concur that an old Windows 10 PC (upgraded from Windows 7) would not connect to EE's router after having worked fine with a Plusnet Hub Two.
