More end of landline

Like many others I am having contract and service changes forced upon me. I rarely use my landline telephone and don't mind it going and have kept it just as a safety blanket should there be a power cut. There seems no point in keeping it if it won't work in that event.

I have 6 months left on my contract, which is FTTC and landline, the only options available online are to sign up to FTTP with no landline for 24 months

Right now I'm not ready to sign up for 24 months, Is the option available to keep the FTTC, drop the landline, and run out the remaining 6 months of my contract? Hopefully at a reduced rate to reflect the loss of service?

@woober Probably not exactly as you suggest. You can normally switch to a cheaper FTTC service (known as SOGEA) losing the landline but that will probably require you to recontract for 2 years.

That said, if your exchange already has FTTP chances are it's Fibre Priority and you won't be allowed to, so what's wrong with going straight to FTTP?

Thanks for the reply. I don't mind going to FTTP. The fibre was run to my house years ago, it terminates at the base of my front door, but there is nowhere on the inside of the front door to mount fibre boxes. I would like a little time to run in some LAN cables to make this a non issue.

Is SOGEA available and is your exchange shown as a Fibre Priority Exchange (Y /N)?

Whatever you choose it will involve a new contract. You could try phoning PlusNet Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 to see if they offer shorter deals.

This doesn't quite make sense.

OR do not normally run Fibre cable to a property unless there is an order for it to be installed. The backbone network is run to the chamber or pole to await orders.

That aside, there is always the possiblilty of running external fibre from the CSP to a more suitable entry point where power is available. I would not do anything with internal cabling until you see where the internal ONT ends up. Sorry, yes, you are correct. They didn't run the fibre, a contractor ran a piece of rope through the existing phone line ducting to enable the fibre to be pulled through when needed. The whole housing estate was done.

That makes much more sense. They did the same with my house. The reason partly is to check the duct is clear.

So no CSP has been fitted yet. If there's no suitable location for the internal ONT where the cable is they'll probably look at running it along a wall to a more suitable location for the CSP (or install it where the cable is and then run cable to an entry point).

Either way, you get to speak to the installer on the day to agree a route as they need access to do the internal work.

There is some flexability on fibre runs.

It will arrive where the blue rope pokes out and there will be a small grey box near there in the external wall.

Somewhere nearby they will want to make a hole to bring the fibre in (generally drilled from the inside so try and identify a good and safe place).

Depending on what your home is like it may be possible to run (say) 5 metres of fibre on the outside to get to a suitable place to enter.

Think about this carefully as it's going to be there for a long time.

The (powered) fibre converter (ONT) can be in a different place to the router but you need a network cable (your responsibility) between the two.

Ring the Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 and see what options they will offer you. This is likely to be more than the headline ones that you are currently seeing.
