Do I need to tell Plusnet that I want to keep the old landline number or is their procedure the same regardless of what I want to do with the old number?

So, a few minutes ago, I "upgraded" my Plusnet FTTC line to be a SOGEA line.

I already have an A&A VOIP line setup, tested, and ready to go. Just need to get them to port my number. I've email A&A's support team with relevant details, so hoping they will be able to do things in a way that I don't lose my broadband or phone number!

I'll let you know what happens, and how it all goes!

Paul,

Do not do anything until you have AFFIRMATION of the 'migration.

We have seen users initiate the move at a time they have SEEN the change ... only to then find that their service gets trashed entirely. There is a twilight zone between seeing the change (the phone stops working) and the affirmation of the change within which things can go wrong ...

Got an email this morning: "Your product change is now complete".

Well, the phone still rings if I call it, so still sitting tight!

(My wife almost admitted the other day that we don't REALLY need the phone that much... maybe one day I'll get rid of the "landline")

So, no dial-tone as of 5pm last night, and if I try to dial the number, I get a "you have dialled incorrectly" message, so the phone and number are definitely out of service! Plus my online account doesn't show a phone any more on the dashboard.

So I've filled in the A&A "port number" form. I did NOT choose the automatic porting, instead went for the "number recently ceased" option.

My ATA (telephone interface unit) was previously set up with a temporary number, and proven to work, so I updated the settings with the new line details, and it has re-registered ok.

So just two things left: wait for the port to go live, and get rid of the temporary number.

Just thought I'd post an update: two months plus further on, and things are working just fine, with my phone using VOIP with A&A.

I was getting "remote echo"... ie the remote caller heard an echo of their voice: I just adjusted my VOIP box config, and the echo is pretty much gone now (it's amazing how a single tick box for "enable echo suppression" has such a good effect!!!)

This is a reassuring thread, as I will shortly want to go through the same process.

I'd just like to clarify one thing:

At the moment my plusnet service - broadband and landline - is through the old analog phone line. My upgrade options to fibre connection are all "full fibre technology" which means FFTP rather than FFTC, and do not include a landline.

If I upgrade to one of the FFTP packages, and the landline is disconnected, does this circumvent the need to go via the SOGEA route? Can I ask A&A to port the landline as soon as the change to FFTP is complete? Do I need to tell Plusnet that I want to keep my landline number?

Grateful for advice.

SOGEA is Internet over the old copper line from the FTTC Cabinet whereas FTTP is a completely new install of fibre optic cable.

As to you phone, the situation is still the same. You do nothing until the upgrade is complete and then port the number out. You have 30 days to do this from whan the phone service ceases.

My assumption is that if you tell Plusnet that you wish to keep your landline number, they will be trained to try to transfer you over to EE, who will sell you a combined Internet/phone service.

The concept of porting the ceased number to an independant VoIP provider is probably a total mystery to many Agents, so best to say nothing.

Totally agree, @Baldrick1 - the agents work to scripts, one of which is headed 'How to tie a customer into the BT//EE ecosystem'.

So, whilst I moved to SOGEA, I would guess that a move to FTTP will be the same.

I said nothing to Plusnet about the voice (it was all done online anyway), just waited (a) to hear that the move was complete; (b) for the dial tone to disappear, then told A&A (online again) to do a MANUAL move.

I already had the A&A account set up and tested using the temporary number, so it was about a week before the number on my A&A had changed... They sent emails with progress..
