Your existing broadband service is 'attached' to the phone number on the landline. Porting will cease the landline and thus the attached broadband.

There are various posts relating to this (many about 2 years ago). I don't seem to be able to ad to the threads , maybe they are locked?

I've had a SIPGATE VoIP service for several years, since I don't use the landline much I'm trying to swap the number ...ie port my existing Plusnet Landline number to SIPGATE. Having done all the paperwork, I got charged £25 then told the number was not active (it is obviously , it's why I want to port it).

Anyhow plusnet support are very supportive but it's not clear how it'll get resolved since SIPGATE seem to have "tried and failed" and if I pay another £25 they will try and fail again.

I'll try to keep the status here as I found other folks experience useful.

One useful Tidbit, the https://checkit.uboss.com/Calling/UkPhoneNumberRangeHolders

Allows you to see who "owns" your phone number.

Do you currently have broadband ? I would guess you do since Plusnet has never done phone only. In which case porting your phone will cancel the broadband.

There's been a couple of reports on here recently of Sipgate failing ports , although in those cases the numbers weren't active, but they were capable of being ported

I do have broadband, been with Force9->plusnet for 30 years almost to the day.

I did see a note from SIPGATE that porting the number would end the broadband ... seems odd as they are not taking over the line, it's just a number switch.

It'll be "interesting" if I end up off the grid for a while 😞

Seems like I could not resolve the issue with SipGate, I'll try again in 18months .

In the end, after 30 years I'm moving off PlusNet to Zen. PlusNet did that "trick" with mid-contract price rises, so in effect you're contractually agreeing to "any price we like" and if you try to cancel you have to pay the full contract (at the hiked price) in any case. The only offer they had was another price-hike-contract without a phone line, at £1/month more than my existing one.

So I'm switching to company that does not have the price hikes, then in a few years when this gets tagged as the "next PPI scandal" I'll look forward to a refund.

So I guess it's goodbye to this community, it's been fun especially the early days of Froce9.
