No idea what happened TBH, but one of our phones has a scrollable memory of received calls, with dates and times. I've just thought to scroll back through that and all calls received from 12/10/2023 until my test call a short time ago are logged as "Private". I'm assuming the phone is just logging the incoming CLI information and adding a date and time stamp from its internal clock. This log tallies with what was shown on the phone screens at the time.

The test calls I've just made worked fine, I tried a mobile call and then also one from a VOIP phone with a local area number and both displayed OK. Thanks for your help, perhaps the threat of looking at it may have frightened it into behaving itself!

I've just bought a BT 4000 cordless phone and my telephone contact with Plusnet includes the Caller Display service.

But when someone phones, it says No number on the display. When I dial 1471, it reads out the phone number of the last call.

Why doesn't the number show on the display?.

I have a corded phone in another room that does show the callers number, but the BT 4000 phone doesn't and I can't find anything in the settings that relates to Caller Display.

But I have checked the phone and cany find anything in the settings that relates to Caller Display. So I currently don't have the service that I'm paying for.

I read through the 64 (?) page user guide for the phone.

I don't have that model so can't explore one or two (remote, at best) possibilities on why its current setup may not be displaying the number.

Welcome to the forum @bassman23 🙂

I've read the user guide

https://www.bt.com/content/dam/bt/help/legacy-ug/others/BT4000%20Big%20Button%20user%20guide%20Ed.2.pdf

and as is the norm with all phones with caller display that I've come across, it should just work without having to 'enable' it.

Have you tried it in the socket in which your corded phone works?

It could of course be that you've had the bad luck to to have bought a faulty phone - it does happen.
Do you have a friend or neighbour with caller display on whose line you could try your phone?

I've tried it in the socket that my corded phones caller display works and the BT 4000 caller display worked. And when I reconnected back in the other room where it wasn't working, it works now!

So disconnecting it, then connecting it again, seems to have solved the problem.

Our phones stopped displaying numbers a week or two ago. Tried changing phones and have ruled the phone out as a cause. If I plug the phone into our VOIP ATA caller display works fine, plug it into the landline and it doesn't work. Same for the DECT phones we have. Caller display works when the base station is plugged into the VOIP ATA, doesn't work when plugged into the Plusnet landline.

Not sure how long it's been like this, I first noticed it about a week or so ago when my mother in law called. Instead of showing her name on the phone the message displayed was "Private Number". Just had the same thing happen this morning, a friend called and the DECT phone just displayed "Private number".

Not sure I want to risk reporting this as a fault, as we need the landline phone to keep working until our contract expires - I don't want to risk losing the number if I can help it. Some friends lost their landline phone altogether when they reported a fault a few weeks ago, they were told that phone lines aren't being fixed if there are faults and are just being disconnected.

I'm thinking some VOIP shenanigans are going on. Is your mother and friend using an ordinary PSTN landline or is it VOIP phone?

Thanks for the quick reply, much appreciated.

Unfortunately I can't easily call from a mobile right now as we have no signal here. Mother in law is still using a BT landline phone as she has a fall alarm connected to it. When her number came up as a private number when she called I asked here if anything had changed and she said it hadn't, she's still using the same big button RNIB phone she's had for a few years.

I'll try and wander up the hill behind us later (after my wife's back to answer the landline) and see if I can get a mobile signal to make a test call and report back later.
