Yet Another FTTP Installation Query

The situation is I have now renewed my Plusnet contract for a new FTTP connection.

Openreach have sent me two text messages. The first speaks of "access to the outside of your property to complete pre-work and attach a small box." (I know this would be the CSP box) "Once complete we'll confirm your appointment date."

This seems to me to imply two Openreach visits. One to attach the CSP outside my property - where I don't need to be present - followed by a second, internal visit to set up the ONT.

Can anyone confirm this interpretation?

Now I was rather hoping that the CSP could possibly be mounted inside the property alongside the ONT. However I realise this may not be possible.

There is an option to reply "ACCESS" to the initial text message if home owner needs to be present for CSP install. Possibly I could take advantage of this?

@jab1 It's very common for FTTP installs to specify 2 visits particularly if fed underground and OR have no idea if the ducting is clear. In fact in my case the checker said my line was partially direct in ground which was wrong, older houses on the estate do have DIG, there is a lot of OR work going on to put ducts in. My first engineer visit found my duct was blocked, and just marked it and left. That was on the 9th of April, thanks to Openreach being totally incompetent at arranging anything my FTTP was eventually activated on the 4th of July.😫

"FTTP Install Process - KCI2 Assure"

Here is a likely explanation of this:

Re: KCI2 Assure
https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Fibre-broadband/KCI2-Assure/td-p/2419277

Possibly this:
"an issue with your address ( although the same issue may affect many others ) was identified that requires the installation to be done in two stages"

"An example could be, someone’s existing copper pair service is underground but not ducted..."

@bmc wrote:

"Our records show the following FTTP network service information for these premises:-Single Dwelling Unit Residential UG Pre built to curtilage hard"

Sounds like I may need to reply "ACCESS"! I'd rather I was at home for the CSP install, so I can discuss it with the installer.

My installation was KCI2 pre built to curtilage soft.
The first team of subcontractors came and installed a jolly box in the pavement and a duct across my soft dig lawn They also installed a draw rope

Contractors from a different company did the fibre installation.

I assume that your duct has to cross paving/tarmac, the fitting of which probably requires different skills/teams and tools to fibre installers.

In my case, the situation is a bit unusual as the distance from my property and the existing BT ground chamber - for access to landline and now fibre - is measurable in inches!

The physical distance from this BT ground chamber and my existing BT/Openreach landline master socket is all of six feet. Unfortunately, as the property pre-dates 1990 and the existing landline cable is armoured, there is likely no duct feed to the existing socket.

I have in mind my own 'ideal' solution: with the CSP and ONT being installed adjacent to the existing master socket. Which I would also like preserved so I can perhaps make use of it later on. Also, there are no power sockets available at this location.

So it's all very 'theoretical' at the moment. 😊

It might only be 6 feet but it is across a hard surface. This means you need a team with cutters and heavy digging tools to install the duct plus probably another team to make good the damaged surfaces. KCI 2 means Keep Customer Informed, the 2 means that it is a multi visit installation process.

It is not unusual for the fibre duct to take a short route to the property then the fibre be 'clipped' to the external property wall to a suitable entry point.

The race between my "ACCESS" text and the installers was won by the installers! They've been and gone.

I now have a grey Openreach CSP box mounted on an external wall. It's slimmer than I expected.

They called when I was in and so I got to speak with them, they wanted to know where my router was (on the extension socket) and I explained where I wanted it to end up being (next to the BT landline master socket) . They have left it as a problem for the ONT installer to route the incoming cable through two walls via an external cupboard.

So no internal CSP but the ONT should end up on a wall adjacent to the current BT landline socket. A nice compromise as that means I can still get my hands on the eventually unused Openreach NTE and see if I can use the landline extension cable to perhaps pull an Ethernet cable through to the router/PC's current location. Meanwhile I will simply use the already tested 5GHz Wi-Fi link to get from the router's eventual new location to the PC.

Depending upon thd speed that you need, you may be able to use the telephone extension cable as an ethernet cable. Others on here have done it. I will let them explain how to.
