I've placed an order for broadband in the flat I'm moving into tomorrow, I chose self installation and received a text saying that it's due to be activated on the 19th. Annoyingly I've just had an email to say that an engineer appointment has been booked and I'll need to be in the flat on the 22nd to give them access. I don't understand why they're needed though?

Hi!

No it isn't full fibre (full fibre isn't available in the area) and yes it does have an existing ONT.

Hi @georgiecal30c,
If there is no Full fibre (FTTP) there cannot be a ONT.
You more than likely have a phone master socket https://www.bt.com/help/broadband/getting-set-up/home-networks/a-wired-home-network/what-type-of-master-socket-have-i-got-
An engineer may be required as the socket/line has been discontinued at the green cabinet. You will be getting FTTC without phone line

https://www.plus.net/broadband/discover/what-is-sogea/

If Full Fibre (FTTP) is not available, then there will be no BT supplied ONT.

Is it actually an ONT or is it a standard telephone master socket (NTE5c or later)?

If it is an ONT is it some other network provider's infrastructure?

If this is a SOGEA install, then it will be to a standard "phone" socket, but that does not mean that the local circuit is connected.

You say that it is a flat - is it a communal building? If yes there might be internal connectivity matters to be addressed.

Hi @Townman @mystreet1

ok I think I understand! Just looking into the socket and it seems I was wrong in saying it was an ONT.

It's a single socket that I\ll be connecting a microfilmer to (this is what the previous tenant did)

Will this still require an engineer visit?

thanks!

This looks like one of those cases where external work is required which may, or may not, require the engineer to visit your property. If they do visit, it may result in a new faceplate on the Master Socket which has a built in microfilter.

For information, an OR ONT looks something like this

https://support.aa.net.uk/Openreach_FTTP_ONT

Will this still require an engineer visit?

Yes, it will require an engineer appointment. In all likelyhood they will just need to make the connection at the local cabinet but they also may require to visit the property to check in case there are any problems.
