I'm sorry if this has already been asked and resolved.

Do engineers still need to drill through the wall or possibly dig up the property if I already have an OpenReach socket installed in the property?

My landlady has just paid a fortune on renovating the property so understandably doesn't want holes drilling or anything.

Thanks.

I'm not entirely sure of the difference, I understand one involves copper cables and a cabinet and the other doesn't. I just want broadband that doesn't involve drilling, haha. In other properties I rented, I never needed an engineer to do that so I assume it was FTTC?

Thanks.

We need to know which services are available at the property - does it currently have a phone number? If yes, enter the phone number into this site - https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL, and post a screenshot of the result - obscuring the number. If not, use the address option, but obscure the address and again post the result.

@nchny90

Just below the results window of the Checker will be narrative about FTTP. Does it say o/h or u/g feed and are any problems expected?

That aside if your landlady is happy to lose her phone service it is entirely possible the fibre feed could come in through the existing coper cable entry point. A small ONT needs to be fitted to the wall (near a power source). As the router is connected via ethernet cable you have reasonable leeway as to where it gets sited.

Have a look here at the OR ONT - https://support.aa.net.uk/Openreach_FTTP_ONT

You need to speak to your landlady to see what see wants. FTTP is better (more resiliant) but PN do not offer a phone service with it.

Replies are confusing the issue. You are not in a FTTP priority area so my understanding is that you have the choice. You can either sign up for fibre of fibre extra and use the existing BT master socket or sign up for full fibre and have holes drilled and boxes fitted to both internal and external walls. If you want a landline phone then you need to make that clear when you sign up. Plusnet do not offer a digital landline phone service with full fibre and are pushing SOGEA for fibre and fibre extra contracts, which again comes with no phone, so you must get this confirmed.

To confirm availability ring the Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632.

Note, in the future your landlady won’t have the choice, the copper connection will be disabled and full fibre or mobile will be the.only options from any ISP.

@nchny90

Just to be clear you do have a choice and FTTC speeds look reasonable.

Another user has just posted the following on a different thread. If you go with FTTP you speak to the installers on the day about what you'd like and, if possible, they're usually happy to oblidge.

"Yesterday was FTTC to FTTP upgrade day. My timeslot was 13:00 - 18:00 but no show until about 18:10 when two chaps arrived to do the work.

After checking the location first question was "where's your router?" Initially they weren't happy as it was the other side of the room but I pointed them to the CAT5e cable I had already installed and there was no problem.

Next was where to locate the ONT. Replacing the original master socket meant no wall drilling was required and a very neat solution.

After the internal work was done it was to time to climb the pole just outside the house and replace to old copper connection with the new fibre cable.

Back inside and I asked if I should turn off the Plusnet Hub Two router but there was no need. The ethernet cable was plugged into the ONT and I was told all was done and just wait for the router to work its magic and less than two minutes later it displayed a blue light. Initial speed test showed about 150Mbps (up from my old 8 Mbps).

As no drilling was done there was no mess to tidy up so the chaps left. Total time on site was about 55 minutes."

Brian
