@VileReynard wrote:

Using non-routable addresses for my devices gives a lot of protection from the internet.

That is a very naive view to take as it doesn't take into account the fact that most attacks are not carried out at the network layer but rather exploit vulnerabilities in layer 7 applications as well as the users that use them. NAT is limited in helping with either and provides no additional security whatsoever beyond that which a statefull firewall can provide.

There is a reason why the original authors of NAT clearly state it is not a security function and why the designers of IPv6 kept it out of the spec in its previous (IPv4) form.

Dispensing with the "pain the [-Censored-]" that is NAT for a few home office services for one. Full access from home to all my employers infrastructure for another, without having to jump through the hoops of tunnels / VPN.

Of course these things can be worked around, but it's 2019 for <insert deity here> sake... it's not like the core network kit doesn't support it.

Maybe it's not that Plusnet do not want to provide IPv6 but rather that their master's, BTplc, insist on keeping such restrictions in place on their budget ISP service to help justify the additional cost of BT Retail's offering.

Me too for IPv6 please.

Yes, I know that Facebook/Insta/Twitter/Google are on IPv4, and yes, I know that "nothing popular" is IPv6 only, and no, I don't have a "killer" use-case that can't be solved by jumping through some crazy hoops. But come on, it's the end of 2019, it's high time we had some IPv6.

I'm tech-savvy, I've got all the right equipment at home to make it work, I'm happy to agree to an "I won't bombard tech support with stupid questions about how to configure my router" type thing if there's an Early Adopters programme. I'll help out if I can to get this up and running - what do we need to do to make it happen?

It begs the question how this is handled on Plusnet’s infrastructure, For example is there an IP address for every subscriber or does it work the same way as party line telephone services did years ago but with more subscribers having to share a fixed pool of addresses? If so then I guess that it’s time to grab a fixed address.

In IPv6 is *really* needed, have you though about using 6in4 or 6to4 if your router supports it?

I use 6to4, and plusnet is good enough to route the packages. So I have a virtual IPv6 inside my home network.

Only hassle is as the Ipv6 has an encapulation of the router IPv4 address, everytime the ADSL connection breaks and gets restablished, if the IPv4 address changes - then all the local network IPv6 adresses need reasigning. Most IPv6 implimentation are set up with this in mind, e.g. I use stateless. This means that the updated IP adress propogates behinds the scene, and I don't need to do anything.

Those with a 'need' (or even just a 'desire') have long since been using transition technologies like 6in4/6to4 but it is not a viable end-state and hence doesn't remove the push on Plusnet as an ISP to do their bit of providing native IPv6 support.
