@MisterW

"You need help?

Customers calling with SIP/NAT issues really will not get a lot of sympathy - at every stage we are recommending not doing SIP and NAT. It can (and does) take many hours to debug the issues people have with SIP and NAT, and then may simply mean it cannot be made to work.

Unless you are contacting us for help sorting IPv6 non NAT SIP as a solution to this, our staff will refer you to this web site for any SIP/NAT issues. If you really want help with them, beyond saying "SIP and NAT usually does not work, sorry", then we have an hourly rate and even then cannot guarantee we can solve your issues. The answer is to do it properly without NAT."

Wow, if that's their attitude on a customer facing support page, it's no wonder their support staff get - to quote myself - 'a bit shirty'.

"at every stage we are recommending not doing SIP and NAT"

How is an end user, a customer of Plusnet who has been with them for donkey's years, supposed to know that they will encounter an issue like this having been recommended (via these boards) to stay with Plusnet for broadband and transfer their line to A&A?

I've mentioned it an odd time in passing as something to be aware of to someone clearly not tech-savvy thinking of going down this route versus the more-obvious for them BT/EE alternative. But, from the above statement(s), it's clear this is a more fundamental problem.

If A&A know that there is going to be issues with certain ISP routers, it's no good just saying 'not our problem'. They need to be more forthcoming at the order stage. They could easily add a drop down box to ask your broadband provider and, if you choose say Plusnet/B4RN/Fibrus, a warning should appear to say they have known issues with the routers provided by these services and only to continue the order if you have the technical knowhow to resolve yourself.

By the time a customer is aware of this issue, they might 'only' be in a 31 day contract with A&A, but their broadband provider they were hoping to use it with is a 24 month contract that they're locked in to without a working telephone.

This is a very poor show from A&A.

Setting up Andrews and Arnold VOIP with a Grandstream HT802 v2 and Plusnet Hub One

Hello

I've been trying to get VOIP from A&A working reliably with a Grandstream HT802 v2 and Plusnet Hub One. So far, it's almost perfect - except that it usually takes incoming calls several attempts before I can hear the caller, although they can hear me. I can see the calls are connecting because they show up in the logs on the A&A control pages when I view the CDR records.

Here is what I've tried so far:

STUN server: stun.aa.net.uk

Keep-Alive Interval: 20 seconds

NAT Traversal: STUN (I've also tried this with Keep-Alive and no STUN server)

SIP Register Expiration: 10 minutes

Re-register before Expiration: 30 seconds

Enable SIP OPTIONS Keep Alive: OPTIONS

SIP OPTIONS Keep Alive Interval: 30 seconds

Local SIP Port: 5065 (instead of 5060, in a bid to defeat the Plusnet Hub One's SIP ALG)

Local RTP Port: 5004 (the default)

Symmetric RTP: Enabled

Outgoing calls seem unaffected, it's just the incoming ones. I've also tried disabling UPnP on the Plusnet Hub One. Is there anything else I can try? Is it possible the SIP ALG is still interfering with things? If so, can a remote update be pushed to my hub to disable it, seeing as there's no way to do this via the Hub One's admin screens?

I might buy my own router.

Also try the Acrobits soft phone client on a mobile and see if that is reliable (it's a few pounds so well worth a go).

Disruption to the inbound voice can be a sign of SIP/ALG getting into the mix.

We have a Cisco ATA with Sipgate and have both lines configured i.e. two VoIP numbers,
to avoid standard in-bound port issues we are advised by Sipgate to use ports well
away from the area where SIP/ALG operates :

Inbound ( local ) on :

RTP Ports 47104 - 47120
SIP Port 47160 ( for line 1 )
SIP Port 47180 ( for line 2, each line or additional VoIP phone needs a unique SIP Port )

We have a stun server Configured & Enabled, stick with that it gives the ATA the option to use it.
NAT Keep Alive : 15s

I have not seen the A&A management portal. The Sipgate portal shows our ATA connected
on Ports 47160 ( for line 1 ) & 47180 ( for line 2 ).

If the Plusnet a/c is old enough to have Plusnet Firewall in the Members Centre, I'd disable that.

We had good results with free VoIP program MicroSIP Lite for the PC : https://www.microsip.org/

Disruption to the inbound voice can be a sign of SIP/ALG getting into the mix.

For that reason, you'll struggle to get a voip adapter to work with a Hub 1. The SIP ALG is flawed and can not be disabled on the Hub 1

Can't the SIP ALG be disabled by a remote TR069 update? I'm sure I've seen other threads on here where this was done by one of the community mods.

It can be disabled by TR069 but finding someone who knows how to do that is not going to be easy. Mods certainly aren't able to do it, they're not staff and have no access to accounts. I very much doubt that support would understand the request to disable it.

Your best option might be to try and get support to send a new Hub 2 or get your own router

If you go down the "own router" route have a think about a FritzBox 7530. It has a built in ATA and a DECT Base satation plus plenty of other bells and whistles. A highly regarded router.

The AX version on sale here has WiFi6.

Ignoring SIP/ALG for a minute, the fact that you have a Hub One suggests to me that you may be on a slow ADSL or SoGEA service. Is that correct?

I mention it because in these circumstances, without the router having QoS setting capability you will struggle to have a usable phone service at the same time as using the internet.

Neither the Plusnet Hub One or Two has this capability.

To be honest, I never did use the landline very much... I set up the VOIP service mainly as a fallback (mobile reception can be patchy where I am) and I wanted to reuse my existing analogue phones.

Interesting you mention the QoS setting... isn't this going to affect many more PN customers as we get nearer to the PSTN switch-off in January 2027, if they decide they want a VOIP service whilst keeping their broadband with PN? Unfortunately, there isn't a "Hub Three" that is 100% VOIP ready...

I only know of a handful of people who have gone down the A&A route, but all with Plusnet have had issues. Specifically with SIP ALG.

Despite it being a seemingly common issue, they haven't been able to resolve and their customer services - who are usually good - get a bit shirty when asked about it.

I've been using several VoIP accounts simultaneously for over 20 years, all of that time with PlusNet, and don't recall having problems with SIP ALGs (mostly disabled), always using DrayTek VoIP routers until about 2.5 years ago when I switched to a non-VoIP DrayTek. For a number of years I also used a Gigaset N300 DECT VoIP device (again with several simultaneous accounts) alongside the multiple VoIP connections of the DrayTek routers, but at present I'm only using the Gigaset device.

Almost a year ago I ported my BT landline number to A&A and everything has been fine since Day1, i.e. no issues experienced whatsoever.

That said, I'm not claiming to be a VoIP expert, just a regular user with no problems to speak of.

@mike600 I'd concur with @RobPN , I've used voip for a considerable number of years both at home on a Plusnet connection and in the office on Zen & BT connections. The only router to give problems in my experience the BT HH5 & Plusnet Hub 1 due to the fact that SIP ALG cannot be disabled by the user. In my experience almost all implementation of SIP ALG are broken and they should be disabled.

Basically being behind a NAT router 'breaks' SIP and so 'tweaks' have to be implemented to make it work. In the early days of SIP takeup, this meant using STUN or outbound proxies. Nowadays, most SIP providers implementations are NAT aware and usually all that needs doing by the user is to enable 'keep alive' to keep the NAT pinhole open on their router.

I have seen this death spiral with SIP/ALG so many times.

Once you step away from SIP/ALG port range for both SIP & RTP, its effect is gone and you should see your devices connected on the configured ports in the VoIP via providers management portal.

If the VoIP phone still does not work as expected some other network or config issues needs to be resolved,

Things like CGNAT, ISP Firewalls, Software Firewalls, Double NAT, Codec choice try G.711a are well capable of affecting in bound voice.

Not Ringing can be ATA ringer voltage too low / frequency not 25 Hz / shape / cadence too short try (60)2/2

Following up what @RobPN wrote, I've also got a Gigaset VoIP "base station" and Plusnet.

I don't use a Plusnet router, instead using a Draytek which is capable of what it calls "VoIP Prioritization".

As I've a 145 Mb/s full fibre connection, I suspect this isn't of great importance but with a more limited connection I think that would help.

Hence my earlier suggestion of replacing the Plusnet device.

Yes, if it's a slow connection. Trying to use the phone whilst little Johnny is downloading or wanting priority whilst playing his latest game is likely to cause problems of buffering/stuttering to phone calls. Voice needs very little bandwidth, but it can't tolerate interruptions caused by other traffic. You can only use the available bandwidth once.

Routers with a built in ATA such as those supplied by BT/EE have no user settable QoS, but by design it is already incorporated into the voice channel.

Plusnet do not offer a VoIP service so have no reason to offer a VoIP ready router. Add to that, BT/EE use their own voice data protocol so that they can't be used with other providers.
