Hi

I would appreciate any advice on the PlusNet Hub 2 router please? I'm switching to full fibre optic, and wanted to keep my landline. However, Plusnet do not support voip on a plusnet line, so I would like to switch to a separate VOIP provider. However, my broadband will continue with Plusnet and I will have the same hub 2 router, I wanted confirmation whether an ATA/adapter can be used with this particular router please? I've been told by a VOIP provider, that a VOIP device can be used via the ethernet port on the Plusnet Hub 2 router, but I just wanted confirmation if anyone has done this successfully please? Also, if this works with an ATA, will this work in all parts of the country, or is it region specific? I would appreciate if anyone can advise further before I have the full fibre optic cable installed please? Thank you sincerely.

Kind regards,
Sam

@SamV

, I wanted confirmation whether an ATA/adapter can be used with this particular router please? I've been told by a VOIP provider, that a VOIP device can be used via the ethernet port on the Plusnet Hub 2 router, but I just wanted confirmation if anyone has done this successfully please?

Basically an ATA just requires an ethernet connection to a LAN port on a router. It will work just fine with the Hub 2 and there are many people on here with similar setups

Also, if this works with an ATA, will this work in all parts of the country, or is it region specific?

VOIP is not region dependant, it works anywhere there is an internet connection. For example, I've used voip for around 7 or 8 years, 5 years ago I moved from Cheshire to Nottiingham, I still have my old phone number! It confuses the hell out of cold callers who start 'we're in your area...' , I very much doubt it I say!

@MisterW Thank you so much for your reply MisterW. I've received conflicting advice previously outside of this forum. Basically, that I couldn't even use an adapter with the Plusnet Router even after I had the full fibre optic installed, and it was to do with servers and exchange hubs and old BT routers that Plusnet now use with the digital phone port at the back of the router being disabled. Hence, me asking if it's region specific.

Again, thank you for your reply. You made me laugh about the cold callers!

I'm thinking of using A&A, as they seem reasonably priced. Could I ask please, if you could recommend which ATA would be suitable for the hub 2 router please, and where I can purchase this from?

Thanks so much again. This is confirmation also that I can continue to use the hub 2, and don't need to purchase a third party router. 🙂

Much appreciated. Thank you sincerely.

While there are other ATA's available, I believe A&A will sell you one which is pre-configured to their service. I also think (but am not sure) they would be happy to sell you their ISP current router which has a built in ATA. ATA's require a power source whereas a built in ATA doesn't. PN have always been happy for customers to use their own equipment.

Just to confirm you CANNOT start the port your number until after confirmation your current phone line is dead and then you have 30 days to do the necessary. You are porting a "ceased" line and need to confirm that to A&A.

@SamV Indeed as @MisterW has said it works fine. I'm one of many here on A&A but I'd say your choice of ATA will depend on what use of the landline you anticipate and whether you hope to reuse any existing telephone hardware. So give us some thoughts on that please.

Personally my old DECT phones were in a bad way and whilst I retained some during the transition from POTS to VOIP I eventually went full Gigaset, all bought used via eBay. I currently have an N510ip Pro base and mainly R650H Pro handsets. I switched well over 2 years ago and the "landline" use is now so small I'm expecting to minimise the hardware in the near future.

I also used a Gigaset N300IP ATA/base during the transition as it supports both POTS and VOIP at the same time, but my migration was probably a bit more complex than yours as I had a BT phone line and PlusNet ADSL, so had a "new" FTTP line installed first alongside that and switched in stages.

I'm not as technical as you so don't really understand all the abbreviations, but am guessing they are protocols for switching from analogue to digital? I'll look them up, thank you. Anyway, I have a cordless phone attached to a base unit, for charging. I would like to use the same phone. I've had it for 9 years, but now the charge doesn't seem to stay more than an hour now, so will eventually have to buy a new phone. Also, I don't make that many frequent calls, but still need it for other family members who are not that tech savvy on using a mobile phone. Thank you so much again. I'm learning a lot already! 🙂 Kind regards, Sam

I think they start at about £120 for one handset.

To be clear - while you can set up your A&A account in advance you cannot port the number until AFTER the line is dead - not when you expect the install to take place.

As for your DECT phone. You could get a FritzBox 7530 - a well regarded router with not only with an ATA but also a built in DECT base station. This would allow your DECT phone power source to be plugged in elsewhere.
