I use UptimeRobot (the free subscription) to monitor my mum's broadband, by pinging the Dynamic DNS (DDNS) name of her router. Her ISP is NowTV and that router does have a DDNS feature, so monitoring it still works fine when/if the IP changes. That uses NoIP (again the free version). I assume the Hub2 has DDNS too, not used one in a while.

Hi

I have the standard PlusNet Hub2.

Can anyone tell me if/how it is possible to receive an email or SMS if my router goes offline? We have an intermittent power problem at our house at present and it would be useful to know if our mains electricity has tripped so that I can deal with it before our freezer starts leaking, etc. It occurred to me that checking on the status of our router might be a good way of doing this? I don't have a device that I can leave connected to the router so I'm guessing it will need something external to ping me occasionally and then alert me if it stops seeing responses.

Many thanks

I believe there is an "allow ping" option in the firewall configuration pages of the Hub Two.

You could use something like the the Think Broadband monitor but that won't generate an email.

As @seebee mentioned, uptime robot should help you out here.

You need to turn ping on the router home > advanced settings > firewall > settings and setup ddns under broadband > advanced > Dynamic DNS.

The free version gives 5 minute checks and email alerts, you can add sms on for a cost, approx 30p each bought in chunks.
