I'm trying to set up a Deco Mesh, but this has me baffled, after 30 years in IT.

I had thought to connect the main X55 to the ONT on the wall. But I read somewhere that security, firewall, DDOS, intruder protection comes only via a subscription with TP.

So I've decided to make use of my Hub 2 protections and connect my X55 using "Access Mode". But I don't get this option to change from router mode to access mode, when setting up my first unit. The app proceeds to ask me to set up a network name & password, when I wish to use the existing one, to save having to reset all my bits of kit with new credentials.

Have they changed the software? I'm sure mine's up to date as I only downloaded it yesterday. Or is it just a case of the manuals being out of date.

Has anyone successfully used Access Mode?

Hi - I have had plusnet 300 installed today. Directly by the router, I was getting 300mbps but if i moved up to the furthest corner of the house (my bedroom), it was down to 1... I have tried to set up a deco mesh system that I have used previously. This is bringing the speed by the main unit down to 80, but then I do at least get 15 oin the furthest corner of the house. I tried changing the hub2 to bridging mode but then i completely lost connection (maybe because the username and password on my deco was different to the username and password on the hub 2??).

Is it something to do with PPPoE? The Deco is set up with dynamic IP and I can't work out how to change it.

Do i even need the hub 2 or should i just plug the deco main unit into the plusnet thing on the wall?

I have tried searching on the forum for answers but all the queries seem very specific and not quite right for my situation! Any help gratefully received!

Thanks

The Hub 2 bridge mode is to bridge a LAN port to the VDSL port i.e only used for FTTC.

For FTTP forget about the Hub 2, connect your Deco WAN port directly to the ONT.Configure the Deco WAN connection for PPPoE with your Plusnet credentials

This is super helpful, thank you. I will give it a go. Sorry for being a bit dim, but I just factory reset the Decos and wire the main one into the ONT and then start the set up on the Deco app again?

Thank you!

The Deco X55 along with many other TP-Link routers will have a built in SPI firewall, the other are options you can pay for. For me I've stuck with the SPI firewall only.

I assume you are using the Deco app to configure to access mode? For the tether app Operation Mode is found under More section, maybe the same for the Deco app, it could be under Advanced Settings

Thanks Dan. Yes, Im using the app. After I set it up using the default router mode, I then got the option to change to access point mode.

Weighing up the pro & cons now. To keep my network and password the same I'd have to use router mode straight from the wall box, getting rid of the hub.

I think basic security is ok, so I may use it as a relacement for the Hub 2
