What chance is there that the standard router will be improved from the old hub 2 to something more up-to-date and capable of supporting modern speeds and capabilities of WiFi 7?

At a guess, it will be quite a while before Plusnet supply a higher spec router - even Zen only offer the higher spec version of their router as standard, and only if you order the higher speed packages (>500Mb/s).

There is nothing stopping you moving to EE, who do offer a WiFI6 or 7 router as standard, but you end up with a higher monthly bill. You could, of course, buy your own.

More speed and more important stability are so much easier to achieve with a full duplex Ethernet connection,
if needed use a £10 USB 3 to Gigabit network adaptor.

Wi-Fi is about convenience, if only Wi-Fi Marketing would stop advertising theoretical connection speeds
that might work for a few seconds in perfect conditions & with test devices using high gain antennae.

I'm part wired and part wifi and currently on a standard hub2 and my 145Mb connection is perfectly fine but with the annual price increase coming up I thought I'd look at the offerings for a faster connection. The pricing makes no sense to me with very little difference between the speed offerings and the blisteringly fast 900Mb is about the same price as my current connection. That sort of speed would only make a difference to me now and again, but if I had it I would want to try and eliminate some of the bottlenecks - the hub 2 being the main one.

It feels off to me that isp's are offering high speed internet but providing a router that isnt capable of supporting it for most users.

Of course it would only make a difference if your connected device is also capable of handling this sort of wireless speed.

In my quieter moments I wonder if these sort of speeds are more about bragging rights than need.

You're with a budget provider, so you can not really expect the latest and greatest in routers, but you can use your own, I have.

If plusnet provided a speed greater than 900 Mbps then they would need to provide a Hub that supports that speeds with a 2.5g WAN port which I would expect that would be at least WiFi 6

It could be suggested you might not even notice any improvement using WiFi 6 or 7 for basic daily use assuming you have devices that supports WiFi 6 and 7.

I would suggest you buy your own Router to the specification you want (I got a FritzBox for my PN service). That way you can look at ISP's on price / service only.

I suspect that the market will settle down in time as it did with ADSL. I seem to remember in the distant past that when I first signed up to broadband that all that I could afford was limited to 250kbps, which was about six times faster than dial up. Over the years this increased at no extra cost as various speed tiers came and went. I can see the day coming when the base service will be 1Gbps.

With the increasing emergence of cloud computing it may be considered of more importance to get rid of the asynchronous element of the Openreach service and even up the upload speed.
