Am I supposed to make changes in the router to enable wifi calling from my mobile?

I'm on giffgaff, they use O2 & the signal here ME10 1DB is very poor. I've enabled wifi calling on the android phone but it has made no difference, I read somewhere else that I may have to alter the settings in the router to make it work, the router is a Hub1.

Advice please

Would it be any better on EE?

@bertmay (1) I don't know where you read about 'making changes on your router', but wherever it was, was wrong.

(2) Changing phone network providers will make no difference to the quality of your WiFi calling signal.

Both the above comments are based on my understanding of the technology - someone with more knowledge may wish to prove me wrong. 😉

@jab1 I think @bertmay meant his normal phone signal was bad.

WiFi calling certainly works for me (I just tested it calling my landline) using GiffGaff and PlusNet (FTTC with Hub2).

Note I am using an iPhone and when you turn this feature on you can see it at the top of the screen.

No idea about Android though so this may suggest a problem with @bertmay phone ?

Note that I don't normally use it; I just turned it on and it worked.

That's what I thought about point 1

The o2 coverage here is poor with giffgaff.

Just looked at EE coverage map & it is supposed to by better & allows wifi calling, as it seems most do now.

@HPsauce I too use an iPhone (12) and have had WiFi calling enabled for a few years (with Smarty and now iD, both on the 3 network), and have had no issues.

@bertmay From your posting history you've been with Plusnet for many years so you may still have the Broadband Member centre Firewall enabled in your account. It's on the add-ons tab in the member centre, I think it has been removed or defaults to off for newer customers. It must be set to low or off. Higher settings block the IPSEC protocol used for wi-fi calling. The firewall is a throwback to the days of dial up modems and is not needed any more when routers with their own firewalls are used.

Worth checking, it does catch users out sometimes.

Which which Android version are you on ?
Even though the network supports WiFi calling it is dependent on the phone and android version being "supported".
Some older phones don't play well with WiFi
calling. I had an issue with WiFi calling on EE with an older android 10 phone. Updated to a newer phone android 15 and all worked well.

Works OK on unchanged Hub 2 router with Moto g06 phone (Android 15) and Tesco Mobile (O2 carrier). Also, this is a PAYG phone.
It's my default phone mode when at home, as carrier signal from base station is very variable.

OT, and things may have changed (IDK), but be aware that iD seem to have more than their share of SIM fraud and number hijacking, leading to identity fraud etc. - e.g. iD mobile vulnerabilities

Thanks for the 'warning', @RobPN , but I (A) know a number of people on iD, and none have reported issues, and (B) I've been around long enough to be aware of what could happen. In any case, my phone is primarily used as a phone - very little sensitive data is stored on it.

I first became aware of how easy it is/was to 'change ownership' of an iD mobile number without the legitimate owner being aware after a friend told me a year or so ago that it had happened to him. He only became aware when the police / action fraud investigated after some financial losses, including a loan being taken out in his name, had occurred. The iD SIM was his secondary number which is why he wasn't aware for a while that it had been hijacked.

The unasked question here is does the mobile service provider facilitate WiFi calling? This is neither an ISP service or mobile phone carrier question.

Plusnet mobile used EE as the network carrier.

Plusnet mobile users could not use WiFi calling. Native EE users can use WiFi calling.

@bertmay If that is the case it would appear that your phone is not supported by giffgaff, as @Protech suggested in msg#8 Motorola devices my not be supported. Can you get it to work on other wi-fi networks such as a friend's or a public network?

Thanks to you all for the advice, it's all a bit beyond me i afraid.

My contract ends in March & we will want to continue having a home phone. Looks like the wired landline phone will go.

The phone indicates it is making a wifi call by the displayed symbols on the screen when calling our other phone.

I also went into the router Hub1, advanced settings, firewall, configuration, changed from default to disabled, not sure if that was a good idea or not.

Its NOT a good idea and will make no difference to whether wifi calling works or not!
